historically, that did in fact happen when the concept of handwashing before delivering babies was developed, and a lot of very offended male doctors killed a lot of women and infants as a result.

I don't know if non-lawyers understand how insane this statement is. I honestly can't think of anything remotely comparable in non-lawyer speak. I guess the closest would be a surgeon saying "Imagine if I had to wash my HANDS before doing surgery!"
Not only that, but the man who highly encouraged the handwashing, Ignaz Semmelweis, was put into an insane asylum for his beliefs (and died there) because no one could see germs or know they were the problem, so he had to be bonkers.
