- On the bus, man asks driver if he takes American Express. Wink wink. Proceeds to tap American Express card onto contactless reader. Driver simply nods him on. Man now asking what bus he’s on. I hope he has an awful rest of his day.

- It’s funny reading this after Andrew Motion’s biography of Larkin, because you get the sense that MA is aping Larkin in his letters, although I don’t know if he’d read them then. And the KA/Larkin, MA/Hitchens parallel is fascinating to me.
