- If Putin believes this statement by Rutte then we are in a very dangerous situation. Since it is unclear that he believes that the US would help us fight off a Russian invasion (do we?). For the leader of an organization whose raison d’être is to deter by projecting strength this seems foolhardy .

We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition... recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as a weapon. Tariffs as leverage ... "

- He may be underestimating European resolve but even if he is your ability to deter depends on how you are perceived. No reason to think that Trump or Putin perceive us differently. This has to change for all of our sakes and that will require very different messaging and behaviour

- What Trump is threatening to do on tariffs -- what he has already done! -- is completely illegal under the GATT/WTO. By signing the disgraceful Turnberry deal which was also illegal, the EU was helping to destroy the rule-based order. For that reason alone it should not be allowed to resurface.

- 1. Ukraine wouldn’t collapse. The US is already providing less and guess what: You lower your contribution, you lessen your leverage. 2. No state compromises on its territorial integrity. Not Ukraine, not the Kingdom of Denmark. 3. Good luck explaining all this to the US public in an election year

- 1. Had Trump waited a bit the EP might have ratified the EU-US deal. What a fool. 2. Hopefully those who opposed the deal at the time will be strengthened at the expense of those who supported it. 3. Having the EP as a credible veto player should strengthen EU negotiating strength in the future.

- The Europeans sending troops to Greenland were all very diplomatically saying that this was to counter possible Russian or Chinese aggression. We all knew that it was to counter possible US aggression, and one implication of Trump’s outburst today is that he understood that very well. And it worked!

- Should the EU retaliate against US tariffs or ignore them? I can see good arguments on both sides. But Europe can and should: continue the military buildup in Greenland; junk the “deal” that rewards bad US behaviour and runs contrary to the MFN principle: & regulate US tech as we see fit
- No. This is a de-escalation in that he is no longer threatening violence. The lesson is that when the EU shows a bit of resolve and muscle bullies back off.

- If NATO cannot deter the US from invading the Kingdom of Denmark then do we think it will be able to deter Putin from invading the Baltic? If the answer is no then NATO (and the EU) simply has to deter the US from invading the territory of one of its member states.

- There was never any chance that Greenlanders would choose to become American, but if there had been this level of disrespect would have killed it stone dead. So if he wants it he’ll have to take it by force. I guess we all remember who the last country was that invaded the Kingdom of Denmark.
- By kow-towing to Trump on trade the EU convinced him, and others no doubt, that it was weak, which just encourages more bullying. If as a result the US takes Greenland by force, the EU will have to do much more forceful things than imposing a 35% tariff or whatever. Weakness makes us all less safe.
- If Greenland wants closer relations with the EU, then the EU should facilitate that as quickly as possible.
