- Never a bad time to rewatch!
- Friday evening viewing recommendation? Watch VELVET GOLDMINE (1998) in our THE 90’s DOES THE 70’s collection! ❤️🔥 Todd Haynes’s deliriously glittering, hedonistic glam rock film follows journalist Arthur Stuart (Bale) as he launches an investigation into the mystery of Bowie-esque rocker Brian Slade.
- Found while moving my books out of my leaky campus office: Willi Apel’s Notation of Polyphonic Music (1953 edition), complete with newsletter is celebration of Apel’s 70th birthday (in 1963!) This brings back fond memories of notation seminar in grad school!
- Happy New Year, or PHANTOM THREAD rewatch to all who celebrate
- Oh, Barnes and Noble has a sale on book pre-orders? Look what’s available for pre-order… You definitely need more VELVET GOLDMINE in your life in 2026, and you could be getting it for 25% off.
- Prefer to get it direct from @bloomsburymedia.bsky.social? It’s discounted there, too! www.bloomsbury.com/us/velvet-go...
- Fussed over a cute dog on the street… then noticed Jessica Lange was walking said dog.
- In case you’ve ever thought you were awkward, fear not: I out-awkward you. I finished my last class tonight and walked to my car. The car next to me rolled down its window and someone called “hi!” I said hi… and then thought I recognized the person as a former student. /1
- I walked over to talk and realized slowly that I DO NOT KNOW THIS PERSON (in my defense it was dark). We politely pretended we knew each other as the person they ACTUALLY said hello to climbed into their car. /2
- To add insult to injury, when I got in my car, I had a low tire pressure warning light and had to get back out to pump up my tire (in my teaching shoes and fancy clothes, while the other car was there.) I should never be allowed to be in public again. /3
- Decided to watch the wonderful THE PRINCESS BRIDE tonight. Somehow I’ve never realized that this is a Christmas movie.
- It remains hilarious, heartfelt, and pitch perfect.
- What a run Reiner had in the 80s. What a loss.
- First time watch: HANGOVER SQUARE Bernard Herrmann score, extremely dramatic Guy Fawkes bonfire scene, deranged composer? This one’s a keeper.
- Ok I posted before I had seen the ending and WOW. “You must hear the concerto to the end!”
- Post-Thanksgiving dinner KNIVES OUT viewing and lusting after the outerwear. (That’s a beautiful huge herringbone. Raglan sleeve. Mmm.)
- Approaching my new-decade birthday like:
- A Tiny Desk version of “This is Hardcore”?!
- 10th inning and my dog is so nervous he’s hiding under the coffee table.
- Post something random or you’ll have an awful November (though how could you once you’ve seen Puppy-wan Kenobi?)
- My book has a cover! I love that the BFI series has moved to interpretations of images from the films. I had no idea what they would come up with for Velvet Goldmine and the image surprised me. Love that it feel like a memory. I can't wait for the rest of the book to be out in the world next year.
- Preorder available! @bloomsburymedia.bsky.social www.bloomsbury.com/us/velvet-go...
- I can’t hear Graceland without feeling my dad near, even after four years without him.
- Gregory said “it’d be cool if you could copy this shirt/jacket I love” But I heard “it would cool to shop for vintage MENS patterns!” (And then I got one for myself, too)
- I’m prepping to teach MGM musicals tomorrow, so I present to you the greatest/most ridiculous edit on the internet.

- Reading @silviamg.bsky.social’s The Bewitching and loving it! What academic hasn’t had nightmares of getting crushed in the stacks?! By the time I got to the Bowie “Strangers When We Meet” mention, I was convinced this book was written for me. ❤️ I haven’t finished yet, but already highly recommend!
- To stave off the fall semester stress dreams, I’ve started organizing my home office. Today was sewing patterns! This project was both satisfying and hilarious. (Love these weird smiles)
- It’s paperback publication day! 🎉🎉 If you thought to yourself, “DB and the Moving Image sounds great, but a hardcover is too unwieldy,” today is your lucky day. Available widely, and directly from @bloomsburyacad.bsky.social @bloomsburymus.bsky.social www.bloomsbury.com/us/david-bow...
- Rewatching LAST NIGHT IN SOHO and man, I still love this weirdo movie. I get why some people don’t, but it all works for me.
- After 12ish cross country drives, I’m prepared to released my definitive* ranking of regional gas stations: 1. Stewart’s 2. Sheetz 3. Casey’s 4. Maverik That is the entirety of my ranked list, no criteria provided for this very scientific ranking. *our route does not go through WaWa territory
- I made one, but I don’t feel good about it. (10 is not enough! It’ll change in a moment!)
- Life of a leafs fan (I still have hope, because again, life of a leafs fan and it’s only halfway through the game):

- As a Leafs fan, I am ready to be hurt again, but tonight we celebrate!
