- I also show flaws in the methodology of calculating per capita GDP. The world leaders in per capita GDP are all tax havens: that's phony. In Canada, Newfoundland & Labrador has above-avg per capita GDP (hence no equalization) despite lower personal incomes. A flawed measure! /4Apr 22, 2025 02:12
- Part II takes a deeper dive into Canada-US per capita GDP comparisons: policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/ap.... Cda's per capita GDP relative to US rose during the 50s-70s, but has fallen since 1981. It fell most under Mulroney (thanks to free trade fallout and inflation targeting). /5
- GDP per capita relative to US fell more under Harper than under J.Trudeau. And despite lower per capita GDP, most indicators confirm higher living standards in Canada: incl. health, equality, hours of work, environment & wages. Per capita GDP does not measure living standards. /6
- The typical Canadian lives better (and 3 yrs longer!) than the typical American. Higher per capita GDP there means nothing to most Americans. The weaponization of this statistic is an attempt to undermine the policy interventions Canada takes to enhance genuine living standards.
