I am grateful to funders that support professional development for early career scientists & members of underrepresented groups AND I wish the application process was commensurate with the funding amount. I spent 40+ hours on a proposal that will require 100+ more hours if funded
AND an additional week of onsite mentoring.
The proposal includes zero support for my time and will not advance my career. Research proposals- in comparison- bring in $$$ & support staff, your research, get you publications, & help your merit/promotion (if I was faculty).
Since I am not faculty (I'm staff)- supporting communities does not advance my career.
To attend the meeting & implement the trainee program will also require my own funds to get there.
There needs to be better ways to support early career scholars, members of underrepresented groups in science...
