- 🌊New paper🐚 Seabed status varied strongly across Europe: the Black, Baltic, and Aegean–Levantine Seas generally showed high seabed community status, while the Western, Central, Ionian and Adriatic Mediterranean were most severely impacted by bottom trawling. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
- Bottom trawling disproportionately reduced sensitive fauna: while total benthic biomass (RBStot) exceeded the “good condition” threshold (>75%) in over 79% of habitat–ecoregion combinations, sensitive-species biomass (RBSsen) met this threshold in only 46%.
- Mean trawling intensity was strongly correlated with both RBStot and RBSsen, enabling swept area ratio (SAR) to be used as a proxy for seabed ecosystem status and to estimate trawling reductions needed to achieve good environmental condition.
