- NEW: Abigail Spanberger this afternoon ordered that all state agencies leave ICE's 287(g) program. This means that the state police (and some other agencies) will no longer be empowered to detain and arrest people for ICE. Big, big move by the governor within weeks of coming into office.

- This Claremont twit is so fearful of “wine moms” with cell phones and whistles that he’s demanding Trump crush them with violence. Or rather, more violence.

- It’s hard to put into perspective how truly massive the warehouse is that was recently sold by the Rockefeller Group to the Department of Homeland Security for $70 million to build a concentration camp in Surprise, AZ. Across the street is a huge neighborhood and a school. It’s 400,000-square-feet.
-
View full threadThe meeting is adjourned. Mayor Kevin Sartor ended the long meeting by saying “We hear you, we have a lot to consider and your voices are impactful and powerful.” Surprise showed tf up. The overflow room filled + hundreds outside. It ended with only 2 speakers in favor of the ICE camp.
- Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”
- WaPo laid off one of the journalists who won a 2022 Pulitzer Prize for reporting on the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
- they don't have enough guys, and if the response in Minnesota shows anything it is that trying something like this is going to drive a much larger backlash than anything they hope to gain out of it "oh well I guess we'll just stay home" is not how this is going to go
- 🚨BREAKING: Steve Bannon said Tuesday that the federal government is planning to send Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to patrol polling stations during this year’s midterm elections. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

- Moderate, run to the center, assume opinions are fixed and chase what polls well — that’s a badly misguided strategy for this moment. If interested in US elections, “popularism,” and opposing authoritarianism, read what the poli sci says, from @adambonica.bsky.social and @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social.

- Remarkable: Trump's planned migrant prison camps are hitting deep resistance in red areas. In Virginia's partly rural Hanover (+26 Trump) opposition is intense. GOP leaders in other states are opposed. Voters are rejecting mass deportations big time. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2060...

View full threadVast camps are central to Trumpism. Stephen Miller has long been very excited about them. Backlash is another sign that opposition to Trump/Miller runs deeper than revulsion at ICE. There's real resistance to the whole ideological project of mass deportations. 4/ newrepublic.com/article/2060...
- Pew finds 60% oppose pausing visas and 66% oppose nixing asylum! People overinterpreted 2024 as a seismic shift to Trump on immigration. But the data is showing very broad opposition to the restrictionist, ethnonationalist, anti-humanitarian aspects of Trumpism. 5/5 newrepublic.com/article/2060...

- The headline should be, "DHS to keep 2,000 immigration officers in Minnesota." Instead, it seems the entirety of the traditional media went with, "DHS to withdraw 700 immigration officers from Minnesota." This presser worked like a charm.

- New from 404 Media: the FBI has been unable to get into the iPhone of raided Washington Post journalist because the phone had Lockdown Mode enabled. Apple markets Lockdown Mode mostly to stop spyware like NSO. Here, a real world example of it stopping access too www.404media.co/fbi-couldnt-...
- Here is the relevant section of the court record. Very explicit in that FBI could not access the iPhone because of Lockdown Mode www.404media.co/fbi-couldnt-...

- one thing I'd emphasize about this and WaPo is that the MAGA billionaires aren't really doing the Putin style authoritarian thing of simultaneously corrupting all media, they are more obliterating parts of it one by one bsky.app/profile/medi...

- One might interpret the Washington Post news as consistent with my ongoing claim that our legacy institutions, once thought to be the bulwark of civil society, will not save our democracy. They are simply too vulnerable to the extortion leveled by the ruling regime.
- honestly can't keep track of all the brilliant, invaluable writers the Washington Post has let go this morning, but I cannot recall in my lifetime a once-great publication so purposefully shooting itself in the face
