- Today (29 October 2025) marks 100 years since the birth of Klaus Friedrich Roth. The first British winner of the #FieldsMedal, the mathematical equivalent of the Nobel Prize, his discoveries in number theory established him one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century.
- He was elected to membership of the London Mathematical Society in 1951 and awarded the De Morgan Medal in 1983.
- He made fundamental contributions to different areas of number theory, including Diophantine approximation, the large sieve, irregularities of distribution and arithmetic combinatorics.
- Born in the German city of Breslau, in Lower Silesia (now Wroclaw in Poland), Roth died in Inverness, aged 90. He joined @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social in 1966 and remained there until his retirement. He was appointed a Fellow in 1999.Oct 29, 2025 09:51
