50 art journaling ideas to try this year
I have created a list of 50 art journaling ideas to try in the new year. I made the list for myself, but you are more than welcome to try a few or all of these ideas in your own art journal practice. For this list I have looked through my own blog for ideas. Each art journaling idea is linked to an older blog post where I have shared a page or spread using the material or technique described in the listed "prompt".

I caught the Collage Bug many years ago, and I love him so much. The beginning is today | Collage week 51 2025
Today is the first day of the rest of your life, I hope you are doing something you enjoy and are planning for a creative and yummy year ahead! I used to try to set goals, make plans and create a new calendar for myself in a January first frenzy, but this time I admit it: I have no idea…

Being a Paper Hoarder | Collage week 50 2025
I have created a lot of collages over the years, and in 2025 I created 365 new artworks. I am very proud of this fact, and happy to have reached my goal before the year ended even though I have 2 more posts of collages to share on the blog because the days run out to blog them. This week I was really feeling that I need to work on my paper hoarding tendencies a bit in the new year.

Liberation is near | 365 Collages | Week 49
Liberation is near, so near... 337. My spirit animal, art collage by iHanna, 2025. Christmas is over. I hope you had a lovely holiday. Cont. with some big collages. Yes, I'm back with seven newly made collages, ready to liberate myself of this project and you of this blog format. Soon, very soon. Here I'm showing you collage number 337 to 343.

Go big or go home | Collage week 48
I think the saying "go big or go home" is a bit harsh, but this week I'm going at least a little bigger than usual. Is it a hit? Not yet (for me) but like with everything I think one needs a lot more practice to pull a new art style, form or size off. They're not very big, these seven new collages, but bigger than usual like I said, and that's new.

Feeling all the feelings | Collage week 47
I really am feeling all the feelings with this project. Happy, sad, desperate, lonely, joyful, stressed. Maybe that is true for most creative projects you take on that takes months out of your life to complete? It is exhilarating, but also frustrating and hard at times. But we trudge on. 323. Lemons and rain, week 47. These are seven new collages for my 365 collage-project of the year.

Endless grids | Collage week 46
316. Orchids and roses for dad, collage by iHanna, 2025. In endless circles we move, in endless grids we live... I will come back to grids next year, but for today some more grid collages from yours truly. These seven grids represent week 46 of 2025, although right now it's already week 51. Only 1,5 week left of this year, say what?

The Nine Patch | Collage week 45
Playing around with squares in grids is a fun collage exercise. The grid can be glued down in endless different ways, and it's the artists perogative to decide what, when and how to go about each one. It's really fun to make this kind of art, but not easy. Finding a balance takes a bit of fiddling around with the squares, but to me its satisafctory to see them coming together.

I wanted to sew my own version of Ann Wood's free sewing pattern World's Sweetest Needle book. It took a while, but I am stubborn. I finished it, then I photographed it, then I edited three videos of the process of me creating the needle book, the World's Sweetest Needle book as she called it. Well, two, because in the first one is connected but not really in the series.

The Brown Edition II | Collage week 44
I actually love the color brown. I know, strange. But it is true. I might not reach for it a lot when I am painting, but a warm brown feels welcoming and homely to me. It might be because it is the color of my childhood, or it might be because it is just natural and beautiful, but in any case, I like it.

An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one. — Charles Horton Cooley I think I will win my 365 challenge, not only because artists cannot fail, but because I am feeling it is a must for me this year. Say it with collage | 365 collages week 41
If you are scrolling past you might miss it. The subtle hints, the hidden gems. If you are rushing to get to "the end" you won't hear a thing of what is said, at least that is what I think. 281. Say what you Need to Say I think you can say a lot with collage, but it will only reach those open enough to listen, those that have learned to stand in silence in front of a painting or artwork and ponder it for a while.

Celebrate the small wins | Collage week 39
267. Celebrate the small wins I am attempting to create a whooping three-hundred and sixty-five collage artworks on paper this year. I think that is about 345 or so more than I did the year before (at least) and I am a bit behind again. The year-end is getting closer, so I will try to get to my collage table every day this week.

Continuing on using a few Victorian scrap die cut images in my collage artwork - this time showing super cute illustrations of babies. I think all of these are so very sweet and I hope you do too. 261. On my desk: Postal Stamp Postcards
I wanted to start using all those cancelled postal stamps I found this summer right away after sorting through them. Sometimes when we (read: I) get unique and fun ephemera we tend to hoard it. We tuck it away into cute boxes and forget we even own it, which is not a good practice at all, right? I mean, even with flat pieces of collage paper or tiny postal stamps - it accumulates.

Say hello with a mini painting / postcard
Hej friend, how are you doing? I hope you are having a lovely day. Hej is Swedish and it means "hi", or hello. It's the greeting I decided to go with on a DIY Postcards last year, along with a girl with purple hair that I painted. She is inspired by several other similar girls made in different art journals and doodle books over the years, and it was fun working on her on a mixed media postcard for the postcard swap.

Decoupage Postcard – playing with napkins
There are SO many different ways you could create a handmade postcard, right? You can experiment with materials, tools, layers, words and images, applications and styles - in infinitum. Personally it's one of the things I love most about art. No matter how you try to do something on repeat - it will turn out differently every time and surprise you.

Using Postal Stamps as Collage Ephemera
I have never collected postal stamps as a "real collector" but I still love them, and I do love using Postal Stamps as Collage Ephemera. I've made spreads in my art journals, used them in collage and one year I also made a whole series of DIY Postcards featuring only stamps. I loved how those turned out. So this summer, when I went to the recycle center with my brother to throw out a bunch of things he no longer wanted, I rescued his cancelled postal stamp collection.
