These will extend our high-frequency data sets of oxygen and temperature in two new lakes to better understand slow as well as rapid environmental changes.

That will 52 560 flux estimates, though we might miss a couple over the year!

- Great paper that highlights the performance of four lake models (bulk, energy balance, and 2x k-Epsilon models) on lakes, globally! There’s no clear winner. Some perform well there, some better there. So, using ensemble modeling is the path forward to improve projections and state uncertainty 🌊🌡️💧

- I’m excited to share that I received the Villum Young Investigator grant. Thank you! In this project, I’ll develop new ecosystem models to improve our projections of stochastic processes, ie, turbulent mixing and algae dynamics. The grant will fund a PhD, a postdoc, and high frequency monitoring.
- Villum funds the work for computers to think big, lakes should be as clear. - We will apply data-driven discovery algorithms on lake high-frequency data to look for improved model formulations. And we will develop hybrid 1D lake models that integrate deep learning into a process-based model (== Ecological Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning)
- The aim is to improve our short- and long-term projections of the formation of harmful algal blooms which are a global nuisance. On the way, we also aim at improving our conceptual understanding of linked ecosystem processes.

- We’re actively collaborating with colleagues from UW-Madison, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh Uni on innovative models for Ecological Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning! So far, integrating a deep learning model directly into a process-based model seems very promising for non-linear ecological dynamics.
