Every time I see someone critique a movie as "emotionally manipulative" I shed a little tear because all movies are emotionally manipulative, you fool. It isn't real! Why are you crying! Just say it's trying too hard because that's what you actually mean.
I am guilty of saying this about Spielberg.
And you’re right, works intentionally try to evoke emotions.
I guess some directors hit you over the head with it and some don’t.
Makes sense that those playing it big are trying to reach a wider audience.
Spielberg always goes a few steps too far. Jaws is perfect.
Most of his other films- I end up rolling my eyes at some point. The soundtracks don’t help.
I sympathize, ET is one of my favorites of all time but I cannot bring myself to worship Spielberg as a director or see his ENTIRE filmography as "best of the best" level. I've seen people earnestly say "he's never made a bad movie". Like, did we all watch the same Ready Player One or..?
