- For years, I've criticised countries like Russia & Georgia that try to prevent foreign funding of civil society. Now I'm starting to wonder whether we need similar rules: to stop Russian influence operations, certainly, but also to stop the US boosting the far right in Europe. What times we live in!
- We shouldn’t use foreign as the criterion. It should be whether it is in line with Article 2 values (in the EU). Don’t know how you’d make that distinction in the UK - perhaps “the fundamental principles of parliamentary democracy and the common law” and leave it to the courts to define precisely.Feb 6, 2026 16:18
