would it be somehow inappropriate or insensitive to shop at stores geared towards muslim women as someone who’s very noticeably not muslim? i love long modest dresses for summer & i feel like i’d find great ones at those kinds of places but i don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable
nah it’s cool they won’t care. if anything you’re being helpful bc you’re helping to keep stores serving a specific minority community open!
okay revised: if they’re like particularly conservative they might do but you do not need to treat bigoted conservative muslims differently then you would bigoted conservatives of any religion. muslims are just as capable of being either arseholes or normal as anyone else & like on a personal level—
—it can feel kind of tokenising when well-meaning yt liberals/lefties worry about like, upsetting Those Weird Foreign Brown People’s Cultural Norms. like i get what you’re trying to do but… we are just people too & some of us are arseholes bc that’s life.
thank you for your perspective, and yeah, that’s pretty much what i figured! i mean i feel like going into a space that is specifically meant for a particular religion/ culture/ whatever minority group requires an extra level of respect from an outsider but you do make a very valid point
Jun 17, 2025 20:15oh yeah fair but at the end of the day it’s just a shop shdhsh muslim women might dress modestly for religious reasons but it’s not the actual garments themselves that have the significance if that makes sense?
