I write about the Franklin Expedition and other parts of history heavy on the “doomed” and “ill-fated” side of things. I also enjoy petting cats in Victorian cemeteries.

- If the September 11th attacks were happening today, the media would be saying the video and photographs "appear to show what appears to be planes hitting what appears to be the World Trade Centre".
- Overheard in the hospital: “The history course is doing my head in. I’m not learning about history because historians just talk about themselves and how wrong all the other historians are.”

- No, of /course/ not. Chomsky was just /really/ looking forward to the new series of Death in Paradise. He wasn't that keen on Kris Marshall but was eager to see what Ardal O'Hanlon would bring to the show.

Well timed, cos it will remind doubters, haters & sceptics that neighbours will protect one another against an authoritarian state - in Glasgow 2021 or Minneapolis today. www.thenational.scot/news/2581367...
- One of many enraging things about the Mandelson news is that there's no way this wildly rich couple were fumbling under sofa cushions for cash to pay for a training course. They could easily have afforded it. They just didn't want to spend their own money.

- I just noticed this morning that the beloved Free French Memorial Cross is actually visible - just - from the hospital room mum and I are in. I can't express how comforting this is. Photos are from one of many visits made in previous times.

- Spent the day locating ancient parental tech for recycling and getting data off their museum piece laptops and iPads so they're shrived and ready for Silicon Heaven. Anyway this is me finding what looks like a possibly still functioning iPod:

- Thrilling news. The ICRC's archives contain an unrivalled history of 19th, 20th and 21stC conflict and the horrors suffered by civilians and other non-combatants, alongside that of International Humanitarian Law and the importance of neutral humanitarian action.

- The stress of the past weeks made me break out in a livid red rash over neck and collarbones. It's now receded into three blotches indistinguishable from lovebites, giving a highly unreliable impression of how much fun 2026 has been so far.

- I finished reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell over the weekend, only 21 years after everyone else. I loved it in the way I love winter weekend mornings in bed: warmly, slightly woozily, while aware I have to leave at some point and grateful I don't have to leave right now.
