- Researchers have found that alcohol treatment for adolescents in England who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) is more than twice as likely to fail compared to those who are.
- Lead author Dr Mica Komarnyckyj from @manchester.ac.uk, "Alcohol abuse is a serious problem among young people and can lead to lifelong consequences. [...] understanding which people struggle with treatment is crucial as it could help services provide more tailored support for those at higher risk."
- Incredible to see Dr Hannah Harrison appointed as the ‘Sarah Harding Young Women’s Breast Cancer Fellow’. www.christie.nhs.uk/the-christie...
- "She has studied breast cancer for over 20 years, and her new role will see her spearhead an ambitious research programme to reduce breast cancer incidence by developing innovative prevention strategies."
- "The role has been created and named in honour of Sarah Harding [of Girls Aloud] who, following her diagnosis of breast cancer, was treated at The Christie hospital in Manchester and died in September 2021 at just 39 years old."

- Dr Sarah Kitson has been awarded The Eve Appeal / North West Cancer Research Fund Fellowship. Her work will focus on understanding how the most aggressive type of womb cancer (p53-abnormal (p53abn) womb cancer) develops, who is most at risk, and whether early changes can be targeted to prevent it.
- Womb cancer is the most common gynaecological cancer, and the fourth most common cancer in women. It affects 9,700 women and people with gynae organs each year in the UK.
- Despite the impact these cancers have, we still don’t know what causes them to develop, whether early warning signs can be detected, or how we might prevent them. Dr Sarah Kitson hopes to change this.
- Dr Sarah Kitson, gynaecological cancer surgeon and researcher at @manchester.ac.uk: "I am extremely honoured [...]. The two charities have contributed greatly to cancer research and gynaecological cancer prevention, and it will be a huge privilege to join their world-leading groups of researchers."
- Four Professors from The University of Manchester have been recognised in this year’s King’s New Year Honours, including Professor Martin Humphries and Professor Tony Redmond.
- Martin Humphries has worked at The University of Manchester since 1988 and was former Vice-President & Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, from 2008-2016.
- He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal Society of Biology, and a member of Academia Europaea. Martin has been made Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Bioscience.

- Children with Hunter syndrome, a rare, inherited condition also known as mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II), have an error in a gene, meaning they cannot produce an important enzyme that breaks down complex sugar molecules.
- In February, Oliver (Ollie) Chu, was treated for Hunter syndrome in a clinical study being delivered at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in collaboration with the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine at Saint Mary’s Hospital – both part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).

- Patients and staff say that they’d welcome #AI in online GP consultations if it supports rather than replaces doctors, according to a new Manchester and Cambridge study. This could pave the way for AI to help reduce NHS workloads and speed up care.
- Manchester researcher and practicing GP, Dr Ben Brown, knows that AI could play a valuable role in the health sector, but only if it’s trusted by patients. "AI has the potential to reduce workload in general practice, yet despite that potential, AI tools are not yet routinely used.”
- To explore current attitudes to the technology, Dr Brown and a team of researchers from @manchester.ac.uk and University of Cambridge, ran a study around the use of AI in ‘eVisits’ - online consultations available to NHS patients.
- At The University of Manchester, we're celebrating 75 years of the Turing Test. Alan Turing's seminal paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence, is considered one of the very first papers on AI.
- 🚽🎰 The Ghost Towns report highlighted the rapid decline of health-promoting amenities on Britain’s high streets - including public toilets, libraries and pharmacies - alongside a sharp rise in health-reducing outlets such as betting shops, fast food outlets and vape retailers.
- 👻 It was published earlier this year by @healthequitynorth.bsky.social and the @thenhsa.bsky.social, co-authored by @manchester.ac.uk's Dr Luke Munford.
- 🥇 This was the first comprehensive national analysis of how the availability of different types of high street outlets has changed over the past decade.

- Deaf children and people with experience of childhood deafness from across the UK have come together to highlight what matters most to children affected by #deafness and hearing loss.
- The project was led by @manchester.ac.uk in conjunction with researchers from @astonuniversity.bsky.social and @lancasteruni.bsky.social. The hope is that it will ultimately lead to more research into childhood deafness, in the specific areas it’s needed most.
- Research was co-funded by Professor Kevin Munro’s personal @nihr.bsky.social Senior Investigator award, supported by the NIHR Manchester BRC and the National Deaf Children's Society, with research audiologists Dr Anisa Visram co-leading the project and Dr Jenny Chan as the project co-ordinator.
- Participants reported feeling valued as part of the project and satisfied that their feedback is reflected in the final lists. One of the children who took part in the workshop said “I learnt that my voice matters and I can make a difference for me and other deaf children.”
- Men, black communities and the poorly educated are experiencing significant disparities in accessing game-changing digital healthcare for type 2 #diabetes, data scientists from @manchester.ac.uk show.
- The peer reviewed meta-analysis of 16 studies involving 71,336 patients from the US, UK, and the Netherlands published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, is a wake-up call to policy makers grappling with escalating numbers affected by the disease.

- An international group of researchers has developed a new tool to help identify problematic randomised controlled trials, including fraudulent studies, where there are serious concerns about trustworthiness. The final version of the tool, INSPECT-SR, is now published on pre-print server medRxiV.
- It was developed by a worldwide collaboration of more than 150 integrity and health research experts, led by Dr Jack Wilkinson from @manchester.ac.uk.
- Funded by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), it was developed in collaboration with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and Cochrane, a not-for-profit organisation and the world’s leading publisher of health systematic reviews.
