Ethan Mitchell-Innes
PhD student at RBGE and Edi School of GeoSciences working on the biogeography and evolution of root traits/rhizospheres in tropical grasslands!
RHS Chelsea flower show medalist 🌿
- Little pre Christmas treat
- Soil properties and road proximity likely influence plant and bacterial traits and diversity more than habitat size in small urban greenspaces Mitchell-Innes et al. 📖 nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #PlantScience
- My first ever paper is out! If you are intrested in soil microbes and plant communities in urban habitats please do take a look. doi.org/10.1002/ppp3...
- A few snaps from the Go Belowground course held in South Bohemia, Czechia. A fantastic first week to my PhD!
- Drought shelters (and their little wonders)
- Getting to the root of the MRes
- Stumbling through this MRes like a lamb fresh to pasture
- I am so excited to share that in September I will be starting a PhD at the The University of Edinburgh/Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh through the E5 DTP. The work will focus on the traits, ecology and evolution of geoxyles across continents and will be supervised by @jess-rickenback.bsky.social!
- 🌴🏠
- Today I started setting up a new long term drought experiment on campus, stay tuned for rain out shelters and roots!
- Nosferatu had nothing on the terror of my 3rd year bioinformatics module
- Audibly gasped when I saw these charming little drawings in Melbourne, a little bit of storage organ representation, feels very reminiscent of the drawings often seen on @exfumo.bsky.social socials!
- She’s a stunner

- Back in my safe space (Royal botanical gardens Victoria)
- Jet lagging in Melbourne
- I had an absolutely fab time at #BES2024 a week full of plant traits, roots, microbes and soils!
- If you are at the @britishecolsoc.bsky.social conference next week come say hi! I will be presenting a poster (A5.2) all about some #functionality and #trait work, in preparation for the new EHU drought shelters. Plus, as an honarary scouser (Liverpudlian partner) I know all the best spots in town!

- Sampling at Ainsdale- November 2024
- “Soil related work” - actually me every day of my life (Manchester art gallery was a gift) #ecology
- Some #fungal joy at the Manchester art gallery, perhaps a Sarcoscypha coccinea in the first photo?
- Yo #botany and #ecology people, does anyone have a reliable #root phosphatases activity protocol? Something I can either do in a cuvette or 96 well plate. #soilecology
- Submitted a manuscript and had a teams call with a potential PhD supivisory team in the same day
