- Agreed!
- This is superb by @edwardburke.bsky.social on need for reflection down here on reconciliation, & uncomfortable truths re. our past.Taoiseach’s shared island initiative seeks that, but doesn’t seem widely known at societal level.
- B O’Leary sets out his arguments re. UI. Interesting:Irish shouldn’t be compulsory in schools & Eng & Irish shld have eq.constit status.Re-naming of state bodies recently seems to give Irish more predominance than Eng? #sharedisland youtu.be/3fjX54qx2fg?si… via @YouTube https://youtu.be/3fjX54qx2fg
- Thanks very much to Paul Gillespie for his excellent summary & kind review of my book in today’s Irish Times & to @martindoyle.bsky.social for publishing it
- Thank you to Mespil Hotel for another special birthday celebration for Michael!
- Congrats!

- BIIGC: ‘Ministers reflected on the recent UK-Ireland Summit, including on how future meetings of the BIIGC could complement the programme of cooperation agreed at the Summit’. Good to see planning about how new summit relates to B-IIGC www.gov.uk/government/n...
- Also interesting: govts agreed ‘that any joint approach to legacy will require agreement on all key issues, including…ensuring that there are clear reciprocal commitments by both the UK Government and the Government of Ireland’. (meaning Irl plays its part more actively?) @edwardburke.bsky.social

- Great to see! Report is a little inaccurate: BIIGC doesn’t meet twice a year- it meets 3/4 times a year now, but isn’t obliged to (didn’t meet at all from 07 to 18). I think reporter is confusing it with BIC? Headline B-I conf a bit vague too! www.bbc.com/news/article...

- Ashamed I’m only reading the full text of @MichealMartinTD #sharedisland speech now & couldn’t attend! A key landmark, with reconciliation at fore, citing Eavan Boland, ‘Mother Ireland’ “now I could tell my story, it was different from the story told about me’ #sharedhomeplace

- Shelley Deane’s excellent talk:O’Leary’s losers’ consent, Mark Durkan’s warning of winners’ triumphalism. + Yeats’ call ‘that we not be petty people’. Terrific @UCD_CPCR conf to launch new book ed by Paul Gillespie, @McEwen_Nicola Michael Keating
- An honour that Emeritus Prof Patrick Keatinge, @TCDPoliticalSci - a huge influence on my work & life, going back to my UG days- came to my book launch 40 years later! Thanks to another big influence, @MichaelgTCD for the photo & for being there too.

- Tommy Meskill: ‘While some might believe that the final communique is lighter on substance than they originally would have liked, one senior diplomat on the Irish side argued that the biggest "takeaway" from the summit is that "it happened’

- Thank you!
- Thank you Conor!
- Surprised at wording in Shared Isl/B-I section Prog for Gov, given reconciliation aim: ‘committed to the unity of the Irish people’. Hume said ‘unity of ‘people’ on island -not only ‘Irish’! No mention of BIIGC, or NSMC, or of ‘robust implementation’ of 3 strands, was in 2020, in this section.
- Timely to share this again by Robert Elgie, 2018: ‘Maybe the…election will return someone who has a…more expansive conception of the office? Or maybe a second-term President Higgins would be tempted to push the boundaries even a fraction more?’ www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2...
