- They said to track our electricity usage with each appliance in our house. To go & watch the meter change and record it for every single appliance. (We did not do that.) I don’t think our electricity usage has changed THAT much, but God, have our electricity bills skyrocketed in the last few years.
- We’ve been feeling that as well, to the point where I called the company because I was convinced the meter was wrong

- "...living with limitations means developing a different relationship with completion. Where others might see abandoned projects as evidence of failure, I see them as proof of making an effort despite all evidence to the contrary." www.reasonsforliving.co/p/the-museum... 👏 @esmewang.com is brilliant

- "[Writer's block is] the internal critic gone haywire, the imposter syndrome that whispers you're not good enough, smart enough, or talented enough to tell this story." www.reasonsforliving.co/p/when-the-t... (@esmewang.com with some brilliant wisdom on writing, as ever)
- thank you so much ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
- I’ve found @esmewang.com’s free guides helpful and generative. This class could help get your memoir started!
- I’m teaching a new (& free!) class called Shape Your Story: How to Create a Full-Length Memoir with Confidence next week—It’s esp good for people who’ve written short pieces, such as blogs or Substack posts, & want to write memoir. Live class, but recording available: esmewang.com/shape-your-story
- Thank you so much!

- Because I couldn’t message you—
- A really interesting (& brutal) piece about the commodification of Black identity in the art market in 2020-2022, & the opportunists who inflated art prices, only to devalue the same Black artists later

- This is so helpful! Thank you—if it’s not TOO heavy, I think we could manage it. Much gratitude to you for this generous advice ❤️

- I have POTS and did not know about coat hanger pain, but I think I have it! Is it possible to only have it in the neck and one shoulder/arm?
- A dorky question (and tailored-made, I think, for @bcdreyer.social): I often want to put a comma after an independent clause even if the clause that comes after it is a dependent one—because I hear it in my head as having a pause. What’s the rule there? What’s best practice w/literary fiction?

- Oh hi, Matt! Glad to have you join the discussion!
- I feel like yesterday that video was EVERYWHERE. People I know who have zero interest in disability issues were sharing it in their bro Discord chats.

- I could definitely be persuaded to remove it! Out of curiosity, for these kinds of sentences—how do you make the judgment call when your “mental ear” hears it a certain way?

- You’ll know more hopefully in not TOO too long ❤️

- Oh my gosh, what a fun response! Thank you so much; I’ll jot that term down in my notes. I could be persuaded that I use it too much, and there are certainly times when I could reconfigure the sentence to avoid the issue. (& thank you so much, dear friend, for the kind word about the sentence.)

- “It didn’t help that Cyprian’s youth had also conjured a grotesque jump-rope rhyme, which shocked Sabina anew when she heard it in the carpeted hallways of the Asters or on the playground in the Santa Marias’ K-8 school." I would rather put a comma before "or on the playground."
- My husband had a really strong grammatical education (taught by the Jesuits, after all), and I often feel very in the weeds about such things.
- (And yes, I did look up the answer, but I’m curious to know if what I found holds true in the minds of people who work primarily with literature.)

- This has long been a pet peeve of mine—authors stating they’re coming to “San Francisco,” whether verbally or casually in a text, and then I go to the tour page and it’s actually Carmel or whatnot. It’s fine to go there!!! Just don’t make me think it’s something TOTALLY different!
- I keep thinking I’m getting close to being done with the newest novel, & then I am delayed by things like cancer and depression and whatnot but IT WILL COME EVENTUALLY, I PROMISE
