- New article, w/ my colleagues in Econ! We randomized the type of instrument and timing at which student evaluations are solicited to see if either could make the feedback we got more representative of the student body. In one important way, we find that it can 👇 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
- Very cool to have the piece I wrote picked up by TPM! Hope people find it useful

- Reposted by Erica De BruinThe admin is proposing indefinite control of Venezuelan oil, but evidence suggests that Venezuelan cooperation will only extend as far as it‘s coerced - and can’t extend past what the crumbing infrastructure can generate. Meanwhile ordinary Venezuelans continue to suffer. @goodauth.bsky.social
- Restoring the oil sector – and securing friendlier relations – may prove equally difficult. Here's what to expect in Venezuela, after Maduro. Read from @hsulli.bsky.social: goodauthority.org/news/what-to...

We're going to insist they do what's in the US national interest. Time for some principal-agent theory. 1/

- Reposted by Erica De BruinThis is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.

- I’m currently building a dataset on police forces around the globe. No other country has a force quite like ICE (w/ broad enforcement powers, tactical gear, immigration focus); the most apt comparisons are to secret police in authoritarian regimes rather than border/immigration forces elsewhere.
- @adamprz.bsky.social on ICE's authorities & operating procedures: "The comparativist in me wants to think about other police forces in history which had such broad and ill-defined powers. But such comparisons are too frightening."

- Reposted by Erica De Bruin🚨Report your NSF grant terminations! 🚨 We are starting to collect information on NSF grant terminations to create a shared resource as we have for NIH. The more information we collect, the more we can organize, advocate, and fight back! Please share widely! airtable.com/appGKlSVeXni...
- I served on NSF review panels for 2 years, with incredible, dedicated colleagues who put immense effort into ensuring a rigorous review process. To see these grants terminated, and this careful work thrown out, is devastating. What a waste of time and talent. I am so sorry to everyone affected.
- Oof, in a day filled with bad news on the NSF front, this one is particularly hard to take. Journeys has done so much to support and mentor women in international relations. Our whole field is worse off without financial support for it.

- Very nice write-up in the @chronicle.com of our recent study (with Ann Owen & Steve Wu) emphasizing the difficulties of mitigating gender bias in qualitative student evaluation comments, & how we revised our T&P guidelines at Hamilton in response: www.chronicle.com/newsletter/t...
- Is anyone else having issues with Lucid Theorem right now? We're seeing very slow uptake for surveys and haven't figured out what the issue is yet. Curious if others are also having problems!
- Also worth highlighting: we found an inverse relationship between how positive & how specific/constructive student feedback was. Female faculty received feedback that was more detailed in telling them how to improve. They are evaluated in the same way as male faculty only when they give high grades!
- NEW article: We conducted a randomized experiment our institution, a selective U.S. liberal arts college, to evaluate two interventions designed to reduce gender bias in qualitative student evaluation comments. Spoiler: neither worked! www.tandfonline.com/eprint/PNMQJ...
- A huge thank you to Hamilton College for letting us do this work, & to the 40 faculty that participated! While we didn't "fix" bias in student evals, this work resulted in the adoption of a much more wholistic process of evaluating teaching that I hope serves our junior colleagues well

- Nothing more boring than complaining about peer review but I will admit that “single-county studies don’t belong in a top-3 journal” was really a new one for me. Another gem: “not a high enough percent of the paper’s citations are to top-3 journals.” What are we doing here 😂
