Do you really don’t know?
(I’m a philosopher and historian of biology, interested in all things evolutionary, #genetic, or #cognitive. I find most things ridiculous.)

- Reposted by EhudThe Edge’s culture was centered on elitism. The “third culture” promulgated by Brockman split science between great idea generators (mostly white men) and menial data collectors. This is pure idealism, and misinformation that science was just great ideas rather than the messy reality of research.
- This gets to some important points. There was always something cold, even chilling, about Brockman's "Edge" culture. That feeling still pervades some scientific circles. There's a real problem here that won't go away with Epstein. www.theverge.com/2019/9/19/20...

- You can tell if an AI is Jewish by the quality of the jokes.
- There are two kinds of humor: AI generated humor and anti-AI humor. Can you tell which this is?
- When AI will crash your autonomous car into a striped van, the LLM will be great at filling out the insurance claim.
- I remain convinced that AI will be at least as transformative as desktop publishing.

Published today in Nature Neuroscience, our research reveals 2-month-old infants already possess complex visual representations in VVC that align with DNNs.

- I managed to get the AI exam scores to be in the 70% range, so I think I will leave it at that.
- Tried chatGPT on a final exam I wrote (at home exam, not in class). Now I want to kill myself.

- Reposted by EhudThis is btw a great little essay about the historical power of „fake news“, which is often quoted in texts about how Bloch came up with his famous book on the healing touch of kings, and I am definitely thinking of using in teaching about the problems with AI. Highly recommend!

- Dennett too?
- This thread by @timnitgebru.bsky.social deserves a lot more attention. Really we need to be looking through all the TESCREAL, Edge Foundation connections. John Brockman was the literary agent for Steven Pinker, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and Jared Diamond, he was a key Epstein nexus.
