Michael Antle PhD 🇨🇦
Circadian Rhythms Researcher. Professor of Psychology at the University of Calgary. Fan of interesting music, particularly music from 🇨🇦 🇸🇪 🇫🇮 🇬🇧
- Dr. Ben Rusak started me on my academic journey when I did my honors thesis with him at Dalhousie University. He's just published a book, "The Science of Sleep". Pick up your copy here. global.oup.com/academic/pro...
- One of my favourite discoveries this year: 2023's "Air Not Meant for Us" by #FiresInTheDistance. Thanks to @lindsayc88.bsky.social for her tip earlier this year on MDM day!

- Reposted by Michael Antle PhD 🇨🇦Delighted to talk all things Sleep with Karl Henry on the Real Health Podcast @maynoothuniversity.ie @mupsychology.bsky.social www.independent.ie/podcasts/rea...
- Spending Sunday with #GeddyLee. For the reissue on vinyl, they updated the album title to the Canadian spelling: "My Favourite Headache" 🇨🇦
- I'm warming my ears up for the #NeObliviscaris show tomorrow night! They'll be performing this album Citadel and their most recent album Exul in full. And #RiversOfNihil will open by performing their newest album in full. Should be an amazing night!

- So proud of our amazing undergrad Shafaq Batool For being selected as a Rhodes Scholar! www.ucalgary.ca/news/ucalgar...
- #NeObliviscaris are one of my recent addictions. Just got a copy of their first album on vinyl. MDM from Australia 🇦🇺 with a violin. It's an amazing album, but if you've got 12 minutes to spare, give "And plague flowers the kaleidoscope" a listen, so much going on in that track, I absolutely love it!
- Magical Auroras in Calgary tonight! I can't remember seeing reds like this in quite some time!
- My new favorite song of the season! #savestandardtime youtu.be/7b3I7NicGtM?...
- Very excited to read this. Dr. Temple Grandin has made amazing contributions to Animal welfare and to positive narratives for Autism. It's wonderful that she's quite literally opened herself up to let the world have a peek inside psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/202...
- Happy to share our newest pub, out now in Neuroscience. We show that neurons in the Hamster circadian clock, but not that of the rat or mouse, are surrounded by dense perineuronal nets, possibly explaining why this species has such a precise circadian rhythm. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
- Had an opportunity of a lifetime to go to the House of Commons and advocate for ending DST in Canada. Thanks to MP Lalonde and the Canadian Sleep Consortium for the initiative. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...
- Thought I'd take a trip to my nation's capital.
- Views from the Bow Valley Parkway during a fall bike ride in Banff. What an amazing country 🇨🇦
- We're looking to hire a tenure-track Assistant Prof in I/O Psychology. This hire is under our Justice theme, and would focus on Equity-Seeking people in the workforce, with particular interest in those who study integrating Indigenous people into the workplace. careers.ucalgary.ca/jobs/1661564...
- My copy of the new album from #Blackbraid arrived today. Wonderfully creative Indigenous black metal. I really loved the textures of Blackbraid II. So far, so good on Blackbraid III.
- A little #Fallujah to kick off the long weekend. Their new release Xenotaph is really strong. Got to see a couple of the band members guesting with Obscura and Born of Osiris earlier this year. Hopefully there will be a chance to see them preforming their own stuff soon.
- I'm excited to see the new book on #BiologicalRhytms from Danny Forger at UMich coming out in a couple weeks. Have you pre-ordered you copy yet? mitpress.mit.edu/978026255314...
- A fun and whimsical analysis of circadian and time aspects of songs and lives of #TheBeatles. journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....
- Finally getting a chance to spin the new album from #RiversOfNihil. This self-titled release gives a nice overview of all their styles from their previous releases. And yes, the saxophone is still there 🎷
- Finally found a vinyl copy of one of my all-time favorite albums, "In Absentia" from #PorcupineTree. Lots of great tracks, but Trains is a classic and the acoustic guitar section sounds so clear, as if Steven Wilson was right there in the room playing it just for you.
- Celebrating the Prince of Darkness with his final album, the Grammy-winning Patient Number 9. The lead-off track "Immortal" is strangly prophetic, as while we're all only on this spinning rock for a while, it is our legacy that makes us immortal, and few have left a legacy quite like #Ozzy
- In honor of #BastilleDay, spinning some classic Rush. The lead-off track of Caress of Steel is "Bastille Day". Good track, but "The Necromancer" that ends side 1 and "The Fountain of Lamneth" that takes up all of side 2 are standout tracks for me.
- As a sleep researcher, neuroscientist, and cat owner, how have I never noticed this? Fascinating! 😺 It's studies like this that help spark curiosity in the world around us. Lateralized sleeping positions in domestic cats: Current Biology www.cell.com/current-biol...
- Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦 I thought I'd spin some classic Canadian rock in honour of the holiday. "Just a Game" by #Triumph
- Very cool study that was able to use in vivo 2 photon imagining with a calcium reporter to watch how individual cells in our circadian clock respond to time cues (light exposure) medicalxpress.com/news/2025-06...
- Daily rhythms affect all life forms, and I guess this includes grass. Turns out later in the day is the best time to mow your lawn. #CircadianRhythms and landscaping unite! www.marthastewart.com/worst-time-t...
- Time to give the new #Ghost album a spin. The first track is giving off lots of 80's guitar rock vibes. Catchy, albeit a bit lighter than my usual fare. Let's see how the rest goes! 👻
- A little Dutch Symphonic Metal to start June. Design Your Universe from #Epica. Very much a "Beauty and the Beast" style for the vocals, and Simone Simons is an amazing singer for the Beauty part of that equation .... what control and range!
- Quote from Clarence Darrow, the lead defense lawyer during the Scope Monkey Trials (1925). Feels like something was lost over the last 100 years. 😔
- Was lucky enough to see #Obscura last week on the Shredfest tour. Picked up this copy of their new album A Sonication. Special treat was a couple members from the Prog Metal band Fractal Universe who opened the show filled in. Guess there's some drama going on there, but the show still rocked!
- Tonight felt like a great night for some Opera, the new album from #FleshgodApocalypse. (Be warned, this isn't your grandmother's opera ... probably) And this has to be about the most beautiful vinyl I've seen. Well done!
- Another paper from our lab or this week. We use a unique mouse strain with a really fast circadian clock to explore non-photic responses of the circadian system. authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S...
- So happy to share new research out of our lab showing that, in mice, even mild circadian stress can contribute to heart disease and diabetes. rdcu.be/elT51
- Tonight it's the new album "Sleepless Empire" from #LacunaCoil 🇮🇹. Was wonderful to see them last week and to pick up their album at the show. And of course, being the sleep researcher that I am, gotta love that album title 😁
- Vaccines save lives and are safe. Here's a live list of the controlled trials for vaccines. #science
- As a cat owner and a Chronobiologist, I wonder if Garfield really hated Monday's. With his owner likely to sleep in a bit on the weekends, and Garfield being so food focused, I'd think the delayed weekend breakfasts due to a tired owner sleeping in would be a bigger worry for Garfield.
- My cats are really enjoying the new "Cat Guy" video from #Propaghandi
- Amazing new study from researchers at McGill looking at human brain patterns underlying circadian chronotype. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
- Fantastic new paper on Alzheimer's Disease from my colleague @deryasargin.bsky.social and her team! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
- Turns out that Timewave Zero by #BloodIncantation was the perfect choice to enjoy with a Sunday morning coffee. Unlike their follow-up album, which sounds like a death metal version of Pink Floyd, this album is pure ambient spacey music, no guitars or vocals. Lots of "Boards of Canada" vibes!
- Kiitos for the great show last night in Calgary @wheel-band.bsky.social
- Looking forward to seeing @wheel-band.bsky.social at their Calgary show tomorrow. 🇨🇦❤️🇬🇧🇫🇮
