- I like how we pretend we've made progress because we have made up fancier names for things.

- Upgraded my stereo system (on a three year plan). Replaced my 20 year old Onkyo receiver and added a subwoofer. Two very good moves. I wish I had added the subwoofer years ago.
- The final shipment of holiday vinyl--Amos Lee's self-titled album. I have others to work through, but I let this one jump the line. Definitely a jazz temperament. His voice is rich and warm. The sound is relaxed. Tres hip. Another pretty darn good debut album.
- I did not know that being opposed to data fabrication and bad science made me woke, but so be it. I guess I am more radical than I thought.
- Finally wrestled Horace Silver off the turntable. Replaced him with another gift from my jazz friend: Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster on Verve (who also have a cool catalog). I’ve been looking for an entry point to Mulligan—not easy with jazz artists who have, where long careers and huge catalogs.
- Back to jazz. Another X-mas gift. This one from one of my oldest friends who knows his jazz and my tastes. The Horace Silver quintet and trio--Blowin' the Blues Away. Upon first listen, I like it a lot. Silver is a very good pianist and one of greatest jazz composers.
- For fellow instant ramen fans.
- Final spin of the evening. I'll listen to it 3 or 4 more times, but it is that last one tonight. Another great, recent acquisition--MJ Linderman's Boat Songs. Coherent. Lo fi sonics. Hi fi songwriting. Take it around the harbor once or twice.
- Another really good album from Jeffrey Foucault. He writes great songs and I love his voice. It pairs really well with English Premier League football on the first day of the year, but I think it is pretty good any damn day of the year.
- Happy early New Year from Patterson and me (not pictured).
- This is one of the greatest debut albums ever--Iris DeMent's Infamous Angel. Life, love, loss. John Prine wrote: "So listen to this music, this Iris DeMent. It's good for you." You should listen to John Prine. Give her a spin.
- I am rewatching The Residence, but it is Patterson's first time. I am super excited for him.
- Another great album from 2025 and one of my favorite Bonny Prince Billy albums--Purple Bird. Solid, coherent alt-country spine. Consistently good from A to Z. It is great lyrically--more understated than some previous work. His voice is cracked, vulnerable, but solid. This is a really good album.
- I was just telling Patterson that, although I enjoyed last week with my loved ones, I am happy to resume our evening chats.
- I don't care what anyone else says. This is a punk album--Daniel Romano's Come Cry with Me. A traditional country sound surroinding decidedly non-traditional-country content. Nails the sound and writes clever songs. Think the Knitters but better executed. Owned it on CD. Ran across the vinyl.
- Too rainy for the gardens, but I still love the Getty. Great exhibit on the Guerrilla Girls.
- My year in a picture according to ChatGPT.
- This is another great (start to finish) covers album (like Bird doing the Handsome Family): Holly Cole doing Tom Waits --Temptation. I have another "great" cover album of Waits' songs. Does anyone know it? (answer tomorrow).
- Another favorite album from this year: New Threats from the Soul by Ryan Davis and the Roadhouse Band. Literate indie-Americana: long songs, sharp writing, and grooves. They remind me (and apparently others) of Silver Jews. Give it a spin.
- First sitting to rehab an old tattoo. Asked what I wanted to do, I said "Maybe tiger stripes. And it needs some juice." I am getting both.
- Miles Davis Prestige Quintet Sessions. Davis completes his commitment to Prestige in 2 marathon recording sessions with his first great quintet (Coltrane, Garland, Chambers, and Jones). The sessions get released as Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’, and Steamin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet. Good stuff.
- A fine end to a nice weekend. Reunited with a freshly groomed Patterson and a puzzle. But I am not looking forward to the week.
- Second night (for me) of Andrew Bird's Gezelligheid. From the front this time. Another great show with two Handsome Family covers.
- Perfect day in Chicago. Art Institute. Reckless Records. Very good meal. And Andrew Bird again.
- First night (for me) of Gezelligheid. The inimitable Andrew Bird at the 4th Presbyterian Church in Chicago. Balcony left. Only one more night left
- In the words of the great Tom Waits, "I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.”
- Good music and cool chilling (my daughters dont believe that's a thing) with Patterson Hound. Tonight's assignment? Hold the yak cheese stick.
- This my other favorite Andrew Bird album. This one and Things are Really Great Here... can spends days at a time on my turntable. Nice video on the making of the album--Here's What Happened--here: youtu.be/KUDX8SBj7gc?...
- Prelistening for the Gezelligheid--Andrew Bird's multi-week gig at the 4th Presbyterian Church in Chicago in December. Regularly, one my best shows of the year. Well worth the trip.
- Trading music for a movie tonight. An all-time favorite. The greatest mockumentary ever made. Yes. Better than This is Spinal Tap. I will fight you.
- This paper is now out in print: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... TLDR still holds.
- Newly accepted RR (Stage 2) at Clinical Psychological Science reporting on the state of Open Science Training in clinical psychology programs from @kaelavantil.bksy.social, @nphillips36.bsky.social, @vvveradu.bsky.social, Leigha Rose, @jdmiller.bsky.social, and me. 1/13 osf.io/preprints/ps...
- Here we are again. Easily one of the best albums of the year. At least in my listening zone. S.G. Goodman's Planting by the Signs. Perfect album.
