Whether we like it or not, the policy will appeal to many voters, particularly the "why should my taxes pay for other people's kids" crowd but also, those that think the price of a pint will be 5p cheaper.

Good point. Zero chance brewers/venues will pass on the 5p. Tiny cut for the consumer that would never be noticed, it’s a rounding error. Massive profit boost when you sell thousands/millions of pints!
I'm definitely not objecting to the pubs making a bit of extra profit - goodness knows their margins are wafer thin as they are but the idea that the consumer will see a benefit is for the birds.
Doubt it’ll be pubs either, more likely the major brewers.
