Global spatial ecology and conservation of storm petrels
@BiodiversaPlus
- The volcanic islet of #MontañaClara in #CanaryIslands is the site of our latest field campaign on the band-rumped #StormPetrel ( #Hydrobatescastro ), an Endangered seabird in Spain. This population breeds in burrows mainly during winter -a rare and still little-understood strategy.
- This work is part of the @seaghosts-biodv.bsky.social Project, which collaborates to improve knowledge on storm-petrels and enhance marine protection.
- 🌊 Follow us for updates as we continue uncovering the secrets of these incredible 🪶 seabirds and their ocean world! #SeabirdEcologyLab #MarineConservation #Seabirds #CanaryIslands
- @ub.edu team of @seaghosts-biodv.bsky.social has assessed the breeding season movements of European Storm Petrels for 3 Spanish colonies in 2025. 🌊New postdoc Nathan Angelakis is now modelling this important data.
- 🪶South Iceland Nature Research Centre carried out tracking, population, and diet studies in Vestmannaeyjar. GLS trackers were deployed for Leach’s Storm petrels, the first playback survey for European Storm petrels was conducted, and morphometric data collected for both species.
- 🌊 Great news from our colleagues at @uib.cat - they celebrate 🎉33 years of monitoring Storm Petrels on Benidorm Island, Spain. 📈 Breeding population shows a positive trend. 🌍 Foraging data reveal movements across nearly the entire SW Mediterranean -🪶truly impressive!
- 🌊Colleagues from #asociacionanse retrieved up to 12 GPS devices deployed on European #StormPetrels on Palomas Island, SE Spain. 🌍All birds move towards the Alboran Sea, some reaching as far as the Strait of Gibraltar.
- 🙌Impressive preliminary data from retrieved GLS tags placed on breeding European Storm Petrels from @ornithologiki.bsky.social. 🌊As expected, adults use the central Med following the breeding season, reaching as far as the Bay of Biscay. New data coming this July! 👉 bit.ly/44cxdjf
- Raül Ramos from @ub.edu presented today our Project in the @biodiversa.eu Science Fair “Novel technologies & approaches for biodiversity monitoring”. Preliminary results on #stormpetrel migrations were shown with great interest from the audience. Thanks for the invitation!
- 🌊Exciting news from @ornithologiki.bsky.social team! Field season commenced in both breeding areas in Greece to retrieve GLS tags mounted on European Storm Petrels last year. 4 out of 13 were retrieved in Skyros & 3 out of 6 in Diapontia. Weather cut out expeditions short, but we’ll return soon!
- 🌊Great start to the 2025 #SEAGHOSTS field season in the Balearic Islands. 4 out of 5 European storm petrels equipped with geolocators on Illa del Aire last year, were recovered by the fantastic @menorcaSOM team. Can’t wait to see what the data reveals!
- On April 30th, the #SEAGHOSTS #Biodiversa consortium carried out its 2nd Annual Meeting! Over 20 participants from 15 project partners 🌍across 11 countries shared 2024 progress, tackled challenges & set plans for the new field season. 🌊Exciting work ahead - stay tuned!
