I mean there’s a whole (great) Simpsons episode about Fugu being dangerous. I’ve eaten Fugu (it was fine!) and I asked a Japanese friend about the ‘scary’ reputation. Apparently Japanese people know that’s what westerners think and find it slightly ridiculous.
I remember that episode! My host mom in Japan made fugu for me once and was very affronted when me and my friend asked if it was safe 😂
(she did have official govt certificates for cooking though, so she definitely knew how to treat it safely)
