- Now here's the real trick about energy in New Brunswick. Electricity only represents 23% of all forms energy consumed in the province. We still get just about 45% of our energy from various forms of oil. We could have a 100% renewable grid, but still be reliant on petroleum. How do we change that?
- I'll argue that not enough is done to talk about how clean our grid has become. This chart shows what fuel produced electricity NB consumed in 2022. Deep blue is imported hydro from Quebec. Other shades of blue are NB hydro and NB nuclear. Shades of orange are coal, oil, and gas.
- This is why I can support a gas plant in Tantramar despite believing that we need to decarbonize the grid. We should want NB Power and other utilities to decarbonize base load generation that provides us with electricity 99% of the time. We still need everything we can get for that 1%.
