View full threadUgh, that sounds fairly ghastly (And exploitative, but we knew that. I have yet to see a gig work middleman app system that didn’t make me want to run away screaming when I read the fine print about how it would work out for me as a freelancer. SUCH a racket.)
- Honestly as a part time, side gig it's not terrible as long as you operate by your own rules. I generally don't take an order for less than $1 per mile and average around 20-22 an hour when I do it. but for someone depending on this to pay the bills, it's rough.
- If I recall, there was a whole scandal for a while where it was found some of the major ones were NOT passing along the tips, or were scraping more “fees” off of them, or similar shenanigans. There was some legal pushback, but cash is best, those apps are all about exploitation and not trustworthy.
- The apps charge a delivery fee which does not go to the driver/delivery folk. Depending on the app/location, the delivery person gets a flat fee per (mostly ~2 dollars) and the rest is your tip. What you are essentially doing with doordash type apps is bidding for faster delivery with your tip.
