I'm a nerd when it comes to books and TTRPGs; I sell the former (for Powell’s Books on Hawthorne) and often GM the latter.
- how many puzzles 🧩 did volume 6 (audio) take? A few. My word but this one was less interesting to me gaming-wise—I’m not a deck build/player (except gloomhaven). But the lore/world & the drama 🖤. & did I listen to a heartbreaking chapter ending while driving? yes 😭 that was rough.
- joined a pair of coworkers doing a (re)read through of Carriger’s work—it’s mostly all new to me. This first series has been brilliant. Just the right amount of absurdly entertaining and charm. A great idea when so many books are being set down.

- this middle grade book 💔😭 this book is a book for right now. RIGHT NOW. It is brutal; nail-biting…& heartbreaking. It’s beautiful in that Lucas & Alice & Bia (& others) are stunning & Pennypacker is such a skillful children’s storyteller. #booksky #kidsbooksky #WWIIbooks #lebensborn #horsebooks

- it has been rough at work in our *small* store. this week we are farewelling 3 wonderful coworkers who were laid off two weeks ago. Today we lost one more to lay-offs…😔 someone with whom I worked closely & spent a lot of time in their excellent company. 😭 today—especially—just 🤬 sucked.
- I knew this YA SF would be fun. A fast-paced standalone adventure w Kaufman’s excellent characterization/wit. clever & romantic. The alternating POVs (Hunter/Chloe) should broaden the appeal. For fans of Kirby’s Starsplitter or Martel’s Codebreaker. #booksky #YASFF #kidsbooksky
- a fun novella OUT Feb 3 for those who maybe enjoyed Station Eleven but wouldn’t have minded it shorter, more SF-ish, with dinosaurs, & starring a queer young person of color who dreams of becoming a buckaroo in a hostile future US #booksky #sfnovella
- kudos to the author who not only set their YA novel in the 1989s but made it seem as though it had been written & filmed in the ‘80s. Kudos to me for acknowledging it was not my cup of tea & DNF’ing it. Now I’m reading a weird-ass future/dystopia w/ dinosaurs.

- it practically made my heart explode. 🤬 beautifully done. Out Tuesday, those of you who want your young person to experience Judy Blume the way you did, but maybe more lyrically. And by young people, not just the girls. #booksky #kidsbooksky
- loved Dragonborn so I looked for Murray’s earlier work. I found an e-copy at the library. It’s so 🤬 good. Had me thinking of both Frances Hardinge & Jane Doe. Like Dragonborn, we have another heroine who has to save the day via the power of friendship & proper grieving .

- Oh no! I should’ve waited for book 4 before reading this one! Note to all of you are intrigued by this incredibly wild, funny, action-packed tomb-raider-esque portal fantasy (for 10+): books one & two resolve one arc. Book 3 will leave you on a heart-stopping cliffhanger of oh-my-word! proportions.

- interactive books feature heavily in my gift recommending this year. Opportunities for off-screen activities & books that’ll excite those of us who love shorter chapters, illustrations, & gaming are popular requests. I’ve gotten ahold of (& tested) some great titles this year… Codebreaker (Martel)

- that was a fun, lightly gruesome but ultimately romantic romp. Mallory is a hoot. The whole novel is charming. I could see a series forming (Fitcher is intriguing, isn’t he?), but works as an excellent standalone. #YA for Margaret Rogerson fans… #booksky #yabooksky Out November 4th

- a queer YA SF involving imperialist vs clanner warfare & giant battle mech. I love the cool science meets mystic/myth mechanics of the fiction. I love how true-to-youth the story is: capable, but still learning & preoccupied w life as they know it. #booksky #kidsbooksky
- okay, that was unexpected—& not in a bad way. but the copy attached to this book, & indeed this cover, is a bit misleading. It is not fast-paced. The chapters are short (some more than others) but there are 16 + 63 chapters over the course of 352 pages.
- I’m noticing that the majority of my favorite fantasy reads for young readers this year have been out of the UK, AU, NZ. Unsurprising, but noteworthy.
- okay, but this #middlegradefantasy is an absolute delight. Tourmaline & her adventures are marvelously entertaining. Tourmaline & George’s relationship is the best. The story is a masterclass on how to not fuss over all the details & how to move seamlessly & organically between POVs.
- Out today!!
- the second book in a marvelous #middlegrade SFF series. So many twists & turns. Great action sequences & tender moments. & Jane’s sense of humor continues to be incredible. (Also Aki 🖤) #booksky #kidsbooksky

- a heavily illustrated middle grade novel (8-12) of a different -looking & -functioning baby rabbit so desirous of belonging they pursues a dangerous wish. The color illustrations on quality paper are gorgeous, how they weave in and out of the prose is brilliant.
