The photo of Liam in his bunny hat & backpack is unbearable because he's so familiar. All our kids have goofy hats & cartoon backpacks in PreK. We shouldn't need such clear comparisons to remember that every child is our child. But, as Hannah Arendt said, once we do we're implicated & must respond.
