- This follows our recent report on air quality policy in the UK & EU which found that Britain is currently falling behind Europe on key pollutants, and highlighted how post-Brexit legislative independence offers an opportunity for the UK to exceed EU air quality regs and move closer to WHO targets.
- The webinar will pick up the discussion on the feasibility of UK alignment with EU and ultimately WHO limit values, examining opportunities and barriers along those pathways.

- Reposted by Institute for European Environmental Policy UKA really useful new report from @ieep-uk.bsky.social on merits of a renewed cooperation between the UK & the European Environment Agency (EEA)🌱📈 Also looks in depth at other non-EU members including Switzerland & Turkey. - We’ve just published a new report on the benefits of renewed cooperation between the UK and the European Environment Agency (EEA)🌱📈 This paper delves into practical considerations on closer cooperation between the UK and the EEA/Eionet.
- We analyse the forms of cooperation, costs involved and time taken by countries to negotiate an agreement with the EEA, examining the various options for the UK to move from its current ‘standing still’ position to a more active and participatory stance.

- 🔎New insight: Six opportunities for environmental policy in 2026 "Increased coverage over the last week of the UK Government’s legislative plans to further cement ties with the EU will not come as a surprise to those tracking the follow up to the May 2025 Reset."
- "It will take more than a few photo opps to put in place the much-heralded linkages of energy markets, emissions trading schemes, and veterinary agreements to remove trade barriers for agri-food products."
- "Without wanting to detract from the impact (for the environment) of securing these, the new year provides a good moment to consider whether closer ties may come with more strings or make a stronger safety net."

- The UK Government has today published its updated Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP). This includes a revised date for when air quality targets for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) will be met, matching the current EU target.
- IEEP UK called for the UK to align with the EU’s higher air quality standards in our latest State of Play Report, as part of our ongoing focus on tracking divergence of UK environmental policy from the EU after Brexit. You can read our full state of play report here: ieep.uk/publications...
- The announcement that the Government has now committed to align with EU standards and timeframe for this key air pollutant is therefore welcome, although it marks only a small first step towards the broader improvements to air quality that we need.

- IEEP UK was quoted in an article in @theguardian.com yesterday which reports that the EU’s Ambassador has met with the environment secretary to raise concerns that UK planning proposals may constitute regression from the existing nature protections that the UK committed to when leaving the EU.
- These commitments were part of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, and it is understood that the EU fears the new Planning and Infrastructure Bill would affect the level playing field, and risk the proposal to link electricity markets tabled at the 19 May UK-EU Reset agreement.

- MPs call for more scrutiny on post Brexit environmental divergence following findings of IEEP UK report ICYMI yesterday’s front page coverage in the Guardian of IEEP UK’s new report on environmental legislation and how the UK has diverged with EU: www.theguardian.com/environment/...
- More coverage in today’s Guardian following up on the findings of the report, as MPs Stella Creasey and Richard Tice call for a new Parliamentary committee to be set up to scrutinise where this divergence is happening. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
- Where the EU has in most areas of environmental law gone further and faster in the last five years, the UK Parliament could do well to at least look at and understand new EU environmental legislation, if not recommend following suit. Read our findings and recommendations: ieep.uk/divergence-s...

- 📄🌍New IEEP UK report on UK-EU environmental divergence since Brexit This morning, IEEP UK launched its annual ‘Divergence in UK/EU Environmental Policy: State of Play’ report, which tracks legislative divergence across nine different thematic policy areas since the UK left the EU.
- Our assessment looks at a wide variety of legislation in the EU and across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and for the first time rates the level of divergence in environmental policy between the EU and the four UK nations.
- The report points to a widening gap in ambition and action, with the UK falling behind the EU in several critical policy areas – often ‘diverging by default’ as the EU makes ambitious updates to what was once a ‘Common Rulebook’ shared by both parties.
