Mara Cox
(They/Them)
Meandering geology student seeking the next adventure. Desperate to explore, forced to study. Happiest barefoot in a lake, listening to folk music, with good books, good vibes. and no sense of time.
"Your focus determines your reality"
- The amazing Kirsten giving a talk about geology undergrad internships!!!
- Great. Just throw it on the pile. Need to move for three months. I guess it's nice that this year I don't have to worry about a gap in housing between spring and summer???
- Yesterday during a Geology Club social event, a guy came up to me and said he was in the intro class I TAd last semester and now wants to major in geo. He had lots of questions about summer opportunities and what the department is like. Loved that!
- There is not a single thing I have wanted more or been more determined to do than teach geology and lead field courses. I will keep racing time until there is no time left to race in order to make this dream come true. My gratitude for getting to co-lead a field trip this month knows no bounds. 1/2
- Couldn't be more proud of Sweet Gwyn who has beeny friend since CHM 111 at the community college and my roommate at William and Mary. Today she was accepted into VCU's microbiology master's program!
- I'm so tired of appointments and the phrase "further testing"
- How cool?! Ignore my hand writing!!! Short of muscles these days!!!
- Plane ticket to Memphis!!! Weeee!!!
- My hair is finally growing out and getting usable length slowly! Lots of medical tests and really hoping we're not in for Cancer Part Two!
- Reposted by Mara CoxFebruary 5, 1770, birthday of French naturalist & mineralogist Alexandre Brongniart. Together with Cuvier he published some of the first stratigraphic sections & geological maps in 1808, showing the geological layers of the basin of Paris ...
- Cheery reminder to schedule your mammogram! Getting one today. A few minutes of discomfort for reassurance or a smoother treatment plan!

- "It's strange that that was the second time I told someone in this department not to eat a cactus and they did it anyway."
- My current mentality. I literally said today, "well last concussion was during cancer and covid, so this is totally fine."

- So proud of team SGE today. We took a big hit with the work we're doing to promote welcomeness in our department but are far from done fighting. Tutoring is one thing going shiningly well and creating spaces for students to learn and collaborate.
- Being told that not all are welcome is only a reason to open the door wider.
- A better morning already having had nutrients yesterday!
- Concussion rest has been very boring. Going to attempt to return to classes tomorrow.
- Absolute freaking swoon! 😍
- We have determined that a date with a male magician is a red flag, a NB magician is an orange flag, and a female magician is hot.
- I'm so excited! gsameetings.secure-platform.com/se26/solicit...
- I have calories in body. Don't feel good. Did get nutrients. It's a start.
- Sometimes I just want to see some Muppets and penguins...
- I got a concussion last night and was sent home from school today but am so okay.
- Googling "how you know concussion" is probably a bad sign? It's fine. This is fine. I'm fine.
- I desperately need calories but can't digest anything anymore. Just been in tears on and off all day.
- It has been a rough day with legitimate tears trying to learn Python.
- Love the TC
- Roommate appreciation moment - finding strawberry Jell-O for me in the fridge and Pedialyte
- I have digested absolutely nothing today and want to stop. Will I stop? No. Class at 5:00 and let work pile up is worse. I got this.
- I can't read a calendar. Feeding is tomorrow. So depleted.
- Deliriously tired but still going
- They Might Be Giants is touring! Need a road trip buddy to Philadelphia.

- My roommate (Microbio major) and I are watching a show together and have had many pauses to go down scientific rabbit holes. "Wait...can rna do that?!" "Is that a landslide deposit?!"

- Getting myself together for appointments this week and had a giggle at how much this sweatshirt has been an emotional support item this year. It's very warm, hides my rib cage, and is a reminder of future travels to be had!!!
- "Why is there a protractor in your bed?!" "Okay. So, ya see. What had happened was...."
- OKAY! etymology fun fact of the day for a timeline cleanse. "Arctic" stems from Greek "arktos" meaning bear. Antarctic means no bears.
- I hope this week goes well. I miss eating like a real person.
- Reposted by Mara CoxFrom February to August 1836 Charles Lyell visits & geologized a bit around London, then traveled far north visiting Kinnordy and Arran ⚒️ taking notes ✍️
- Also, please feel free to share this.
- Hello! I am currently taking a class in GIS. For our first lab, we have to create a survey and collect data. I made a survey about accessibility in geologic locations. I would be really appreciative if you could take the time to fill this out. survey123.arcgis.com/share/2bbfec...

- I haven't killed these plants yet! Had them since October! That's a record!
- Found a breccia on my walk today!
- In the past few days I saw a trigger warning on a fossil post and too many Epstein posts without them....
- Hoping this week is the beginning of the end of chemo recovery. I haven't been able to lay down flat for a long time without getting fluid building up in my lungs. I can't absorb nutrients and am losing bone density, muscle mass, and fat. I'll be tube fed a nutrient dense formula to aid in healing.
