- Reposted by Somerset WildlandsAlso in Somerset, one of the fields owned by @alasdaircameron.bsky.social in the Somerset Levels that forms part of the @somersetwildlands.bsky.social network (2/4)
- Reposted by Somerset WildlandsBig flooding down at Athelney today… the whole area acts as a vast water storage reservoir in times like this. This was me kayaking over the fields a couple years ago… hoping to get down shortly.
- Reposted by Somerset WildlandsLovely. How did you manage to find it? In fact, harvest mice are the only mammals in the Old World (or eastern hemisphere, if you like) that has a prehensile tail. Other than them it’s only some species of New World primates.
- After two hours we found one! Harvest mouse nest on the new Clark Fields site. So it’s great to know they are around, albeit in small numbers. Great scope for them to expand as the site wilds up. Thank you so much to our volunteers who came along and to Simon for leading! www.somersetwildlands.org
- In the end we found 2 harvest mouse nests. Still a few areas to survey on this location. Also lots of field vole nests which are more like little huts.
- We’ve found harvest mice at other sites in our network but it’s great to see them here too. We’ll be looking for more in the future as well. If you’ve not seen one they are beautiful and the only mammal in Britain with a prehensile tail. They climb like little monkeys.
- To be clear - the footage of the mouse on a hand was from a captive bred populations back in 2019. Not a mouse we found today. We would never hassle a mouse in winter.
- Reposted by Somerset WildlandsThis would be just fantastic. Let’s make it happen. Very keen to see them return to the Somerset Levels soon too.
- Need more eels in your life? Of course you do. Just under a week to go until our online talk on the Somerset Eel recovery Project. Tickets are £10 or free for members, and you can become a member from just £5 a month. Bargain. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/eels-are-g...
- Glorious icey day on our Athelney rewilding site. It’s really beautiful at the moment. Lapwings, snipe, many egrets, herons, starlings, field fares, stone chats, teal etc etc… just a wonderful day. Help us secure more land like this for nature, for everyone, at www.somersetwildlands.org
- Happy New Year to everyone and particularly to all our members, supporters and well-wishers. Here’s to a wilder, more biodiverse and brighter 2026.

- Lovely water shrew. Britain’s only venomous mammal. Having fun in the rain.
- And yes we know venomous is spelt incorrectly but there is already enough suffering in the world without you pointing it out.
- Frost morning a few days ago. Willow scrub just starting to emerge down at Athelney. www.somersetwildlands.org
- Few more images of the scrapes down at Athelney. Work is completed for now.. just in time as the water levels are rising… excited to see how these pools will change in years to come.
- And here’s a very brown video of one of them.
- Perhaps a picture of this stump each year for the next century is in order….
- This is the stump which broke the digger, which is now fixed. The person in orange is Dave - one of our Trustees. Rewilding life is fun. www.somersetwildlands.org
- Thank you to everyone who tuned in to our pelicans event last night - we'll keep you posted with the carbon dating from the bones when Lucia is able to publish. - Reposted by Somerset WildlandsBravo to the Youngwilders. Great stuff. "the main thing is we’ve just let it breathe for a little bit. We’ve removed a lot of grazing pressure and seen what’s come up.” Music to my ears. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
- More pictures from a chilly Athelney yesterday. The wagtails and egrets were loving the digging. It looks brutal but actually it’s really only small part of the site…. The rest is just changing slowly as it will www.somersetwildlands.org
- Early morning start to dig some modest scrapes in two fields at Athelney. It might seem from our recent posts that we do loads of digging and planting, but actually this is pretty much the first thing we’ve done like this here. After this it’s back to its own thing!
- Wildcats - also known as woodcats - were once found throughout Britain including in the Somerset Levels. It would be wonderful to see them return to Devon, and hopefully one day soon to a wilder Somerset too. Restoration and rewilding, hand in hand.
- Thanks to the volunteers who came to our second round of memorial tree planting at Clark Fields today. We had a wonderful morning. That’s us done for now, we’ll let the rest develop by itself. To find out more about our work and this site go to: www.somersetwildlands.org/our-land/eas...

- We all need hope, and to believe the future can be better than the past, and we really believe that rewilding can play a role in that. We can’t go back in time, but we can create a wilder, better, future for everyone www.somersetwildlands.org
- Message to say hello from our newest site where we will be doing a little memorial tree planting at the weekend. We don’t do tree planting as a rule - we tend to let nature do its thing - but in this case we are happy to! www.somersetwildlands.org
- Little bit of Autumn colour on our newest Clark Fields site. This land is only a few months into its rewilding journey. It’s amazing to think how it might change and evolve in the decades to come. Help us build a better, wilder future, and go to www.Somersetwildlands.org
- Reposted by Somerset WildlandsSurvey of 8 countries including Spain and the US finds 82% of people support setting aside 30% land + sea for nature. All over the world, people WANT rewilding. Time our politicians started turning that clear wish into actual policy. Let's bring nature back!!! share.google/8lsJ5PfS2nau...
- Can relate.
- You might remember Scott, one of our litter heroes. Scott cleans up the paths of Merriott every day. Well, Scott is not happy 😡 In August he picked up 49 dog poos. In one small Somerset village. Come on people, clear up after your dogs and care for our countryside tinyurl.com/vw4w4tsf
- Reposted by Somerset WildlandsThis is a handful of the most interesting facts from the latest episode of the podcast about the impacts of beavers on salmonids, featuring Dr. Rob Needham's groundbreaking research on fish passage through beaver dams. 🌍🦤🦊🧪 1/10
- Some people are talking about fracking again. This was pushed for over ten years, and didn't work and was hugely unpopular. These are the fracking license areas formerly offered in our region of Somerset. Needless to say we would oppose any fracking on or near our land, or in the Levels area.
