- The anti-trans/GC movement is one of the most successful divide & conquer, distraction techniques ever. It has consumed and divided three generations of feminists while women around the world get poorer, our access to abortion is threatened and it becomes harder to escape domestic violence
- *whatever your definition of woman*, you should not want the state policing this for you & you should not want to strengthen the evangelical anti-abortion movement. Because this only harms cis women. But this what GC lawfare achieves.
- I do not care what jk Rowling thinks a woman is. i do care that she poured £70k into a campaign that harms cis women (as well as trans women) when she could have funded every single abortion the Abortion Support Network did last year.
-
View full thread(Hopefully) needless to say also, but the fault here lies with the anti-trans movement, not everyone who fights for trans rights, for us all being divided and consumed by this!

- Fighting for materials changes for all women is how we deflate “gender critical” claims to the feminist moral high ground. Eg The GCs say: leave cis women - mostly abuse survivors - in prison - where they are further abused - as long as it’s not with trans women; we say: no women in prison.
- every time trans inclusive feminists win real & universal changes for women, like ££ for domestic violence services, abortion access & prison abolition, we *show* the GCs up on their own terms, which is (ostensibly) rights for cis women
- AND, by comparison, we show that their “wins” are all notional / emotional, not material - often in fact materially damaging for the rights of cos women eg to abortion access by weakening legislative precedent on bodily autonomy
-
View full threadWe actually don’t have to convince ppl what a women is or isn’t to take the air out of the trans panic - we just have to show them the two sides, and ask which side they are on.
- Reposted by Yara Rodrigues FowlerToday’s HMI report is such harrowing reading — and this is just a snapshot of what goes on inside women’s prisons. Prisons inflict violence and trauma on women who have already experienced more than enough violence and trauma in their lives.
- 🍉💚Giller Prize drops Scotiabank! 💚🍉 A victory for the Canandian writers, for worker organising and for common sense! Whether it’s Baillie Gifford or Scotiabank, however many op/eds call for nuance for the bomb-makers! most writers want nothing to do with companies involved in genocide.

- The Fossil Free Books @fossilfreebooks.org strategy day last weekend was exciting, collaborative & hopeful. We imagined what a literary industry that we all deserve - from writers & publicists here to Palestinians - wd look like, & how to make it real. To join us email fossilfreebooksuk@gmail.com
- Reposted by Yara Rodrigues Fowlerhope is the challenging question. the troublesome refusal. the threat to the daily luxuries we enjoy. the inability to ignore what funds them, what lies under them - the demand that you see them too hope is not, and will never be, the charming flourish at the end of a melancholy piece of writing
- Reposted by Yara Rodrigues Fowlerone of the weird violences of literary culture - the way we are (a) vilified for doing/writing about the things which might make a broken world better (b) SIMULTANEOUSLY: constantly asked, by the same people, to gesture to/perform hope, in what we write and say

- Reposted by Yara Rodrigues Fowlerfor further context my advance was 0.1% of Richard Osman's! (which I was v happy with and I'm sure he sell 1ms more books than mine will but a fun* stat to think about!) - Reposted by Yara Rodrigues Fowler1 - literary festivals contribute fuck all to author incomes 2 - fans? What happened to critically engaged readers 3 - books expand yr inner life but do not apply to real world situs eg fossil fuels/ gaza ?! 4 - ‘we need books to propagate & pay for the empire’ = creative economy discour$e 😷
- Reposted by Yara Rodrigues Fowlerwhy indeed would you blame billionaire monopolies for anything when you could blame a group of underpaid minorities authors. beats me 🤷🏼♀️
- 📣 In 2022, the UK publishing industry made RECORD revenues of £7bn+ 📣 Richard Osman’s last advance was £10m, enough to fund all 9 BG festivals for a DECADE 📣 BG are investing in arms companies supplying Israel 📣 FFB are not the reason writers are poor!
- The Guardian has published another article today about declining author wages (true), this time blaming FFB for this trend (not true). Festivals and authors have both become poorer poorer for the same two reasons: austerity and wealth hoarding by the publishing industry. >
- Cuts to local government budgets devastated festival grants as well as social services like housing benefit, making it harder to write & driving festivals into the arms of funders they didn’t want to scruntinise (Eg BG Prizes’s 2nd sponsor is run by a dude currently under sanction by Ukraine) >
- Meanwhile the publishing industry makes record breaking revenues, paying the lions share of advances to a tiny minority of (often celebrity) authors, while cutting average writer by half in real terms.

View full threadRe the “the market decides” argument of author earnings. We don’t live in a perfect free market of books, where every book is given an equal chance of success via equal distribution, marketing and so on. A book w a £2m adv and one w a £2k adavance do not have an equal shot at readers.
- Happy 2025 💖 If your resolution was to get involved w organising, & you do work that is in anyway book related, get yourself to… 🍉FFB Strategy Day 📚 @fossilfreebooks.org 📅 Sat 18 Jan, 10-4 🌍 online / Edinburgh / London 🖊️registration: linktr.ee/fossilfreebooks
- This event is for everyone in the books world who is interested in all and any of: divestment from fossil fuels, reversing the decline in pay for authors, translators, publishing staff and more, cultural boycott of cultural institutions complicit in Israeli apartheid and genocide and more
- And coming doesn’t = commitment to spending hours organising in the future. Our idea is that everyone gives what they can when they can, meaning that everyone can dip in and out of organising according to what they have going on. Strategy day will be a good time to get in the loop and have a say :)

- "I have been wondering why artists are required to dream up liberation in the gallery, but when that dream meets life it is shut down... I want the institution to understand that if you want us inside, you have to listen to us outside” 💗 UK literary institutions, I hope you are listening... 💗
- while searching for the @fossilfreebooks.org account on here, I stumbled across a literary critic har-har-ing at FFB's invitation to festivals to sit down together & think about the future. But it really is as simple as Kaur says: they're programming us to talk on stage about freedom & politics >
- so it is perfectly reasonable to expect those institutions to be up for a conversation about how what we have to say about freedom and politics applies to them.
- not the mention that they we're their labour force, but that is another conversation 😇
