- Always interesting to follow TO news and see stories about "another tow truck gang war has broken out."
- "Officers are accused of trafficking, leaking addresses to hitmen, and leaking police officer addresses, the sources said. The investigation also uncovered a conspiracy to kill a unit commander at the Toronto South Detention Centre, the sources said." Holy Christ. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
- One region of Japan has received 4 metres (12 feet) of snow this season!
- Some footage of the incredible snowfall in Aomori. The SDF has been called in to help with snow removal, since so many residents are elderly and live alone. As a bonus, the reporter is the son of a friend of mine, a New Yorker who has lived in Kanazawa for 40 years. youtube.com/watch?v=WT2s...

- Grocery stores in Japan mean kimchi maximalism.
- The bright side of the Peter Mandelson affair is that Bluesky is surfacing more and more UK politics reporters. I do miss my extremely active Twitter UK politics list, so hopefully more energy will develop on this site.
- Reposted by Nevin ThompsonI've just moved to eurosky.social, and you can too! For European data storage, and to demonstrate how a decentralized, open social network looks like in practice. - Something interesting to consider is that while the European Parliament creates regs like GDPR and the AI Act, individual member states like France also create their own bespoke regs about "online harms." It's a patchwork. Which means the X platform may face scrutiny from multiple EU member states.
- It's setsubun / 節分 in N America (was observed yesterday on the other side of the intl date line). Tomorrow (Feb 3) is the official start of spring, 立春. And I can believe it. The plum trees here in Victoria were blooming on View Street last week, about a week or two earlier than "normal."
- I've been listening to "Pretenders II: Deluxe Edition" on repeat for the past few days, particularly enjoying the live Central Park and Santa Monica recordings. I am not at all a classic rock guy, but this band was so fresh then, and is so fresh now. Great stuff. www.uncut.co.uk/reviews/albu...

- A difference here is that Kane used his own money to bankroll Susan's vanity project, and Kane also essentially forces Susan on stage to be humiliated. With Melania, Bezos, a Kane-like figure, but not nearly as omnipotent, bankrolls the project. And unlike Susan Kane, there is no self-awareness.
