- ❄️ IDOT maintains the state highway system—all interstates, U.S. routes and state highways, though some U.S. routes or state highways may be maintained by local municipalities via municipal maintenance agreements. Generally, we don’t plow tollways, county, township or city streets.
- 🚨 Winter Weather Alert for Illinois! 🚨 A Winter Storm Warning is in effect this weekend for the southern half of the state, with heavy snow expected. An Extreme Cold Warning is also in place statewide today through the weekend.
- With these bitter temperatures, the effectiveness of salt will be limited, making road conditions hazardous. Please avoid travel this weekend, especially in the southern regions. Overnight travel will be particularly treacherous.

- We’re span-ning some good news for the Red Covered Bridge! After being damaged by an oversized truck two years ago, Princeton’s Red Covered Bridge remains closed as engineering work continues. Phase I is nearly complete, with repair plans approved, and Phase II design work will begin soon. 🧵
- Let's talk dynamic lane merges, also known as the zipper merge. 👉 Dynamic lane merges are designed to keep traffic flowing smoothly and safely. They also help reduce congestion and prevent last-minute lane changes, making the roads safer for everyone.
- Last year, IDOT crews worked hard to keep Illinois roads clean and safe! In 2025, over 100,000 bags of litter were collected in Cook and collar counties. Through the Adopt-A-Highway Program, volunteers partnered with IDOT to remove an additional 1,814 bags of litter statewide.
- New federal regulations are changing the DBE certification process. Join us for our free workshops through January to guide you through what’s required to recertify under the new rules.
- DYK? 🎣 Each spring and fall, IDOT Lake is stocked with 850 pounds of rainbow trout through the Illinois Catchable Trout Program. The program is supported by anglers who purchase an inland trout stamp.
- ❄️ Ever wonder how winter road conditions are tracked on GettingAroundIllinois.com? During snowstorms, snowplow drivers report road conditions in real time. Operations teams and snow shift supervisors compile the information and share updates frequently to keep conditions current across Illinois.

- Exciting news for Southern Illinois! This week, the city of Carbondale celebrated the opening of the Saluki Greenway, a 2.4-mile stretch dedicated to safety, mobility, and active transportation. The new 10-foot-wide, ADA-accessible multiuse path provides a safer alternative to highway travel.
