- Reposted by Johannes S. Mohr"Closer-to-nature" forest management has been proposed as a way to reconcile biodiversity and ecosystem services, especially under a changing climate. But can it work? And how strong is the evidence? In this paper, we synthesized knowledge from Central Europe: doi.org/10.1007/s407...
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrGentle reminder to fill in the survey on forest disturbance change (below). We have *a lot* of great responses already (thank you!) covering all continents and biomes, but the survey will be open for a few more days! Thanks for making the time, your disturbance expertise is highly appreciated!
- Calling on all forest disturbance experts: Please consider contributing to our study on global forest disturbance change, and help resolve the nuances of changing forest disturbance regimes. More details and survey here: www.lss.ls.tum.de/edfm/disturb...
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrIn C Europe, there is a push to align forest management more closely with natural processes, but is this "closer-to-nature" management able to sustain biodiversity and ecosystem services? Great synthesis led by @anastritih.bsky.social with input from many leading experts! doi.org/10.1007/s407...
- We’re launching a global survey to capture expert insights on forest disturbance change. Please consider participating and share widely with colleagues working in the field — especially those whose forests are often underrepresented in global assessments 👉 www.lss.ls.tum.de/edfm/disturb...

- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrDo you like forests and computer models? 🌳🧑💻 Within the Future Forests excellence cluster, we are hiring two modellers for 7 year (!) positions here in Freiburg. A scientific coordinator role: uni-freiburg.de/en/job/00004... And and a scientific programmer role: uni-freiburg.de/en/job/00004...
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrHow forest disturbances can lead to tipping points in the wood value chain. Great work coming out of the RESONATE project, led by T. Boiger and T. Stern from @uni-graz.at doi.org/10.1007/s110...
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrWe're once again hosting the "Smart Forest" conference in Freising from March 12th-13th 2026! 🌳🎯💻 If you're excited about digitalization of forestry and bringing together theory and practice, apply now at smartforest.ai/en/home-engl... @wernerrammer.bsky.social @johannesmohr.bsky.social
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrHad an amazing time at FoWiTa in Freiburg 🌲🌳 ✅ new connections ✅ reconnecting to (science) friends ✅ hosted my first session ✅presenting my two core PhD chapters ✅ insightful excursion ✅ new fodder for thoughts Great @edfm-tum.bsky.social representation with @johannesmohr.bsky.social 🚀
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrOur research in the National Park Berchtesgaden - both in the field and in silico - was reported on by NANO. The segment is in German and starts at minute 7:37 www.zdf.de/play/magazin... @rupertseidl.bsky.social @wernerrammer.bsky.social @christinadollinger.bsky.social
- How expensive are natural disturbances for Europes forestry? I'm super excited, that @natclimate.nature.com decided to publish a Research Briefing by @rupertseidl.bsky.social and me related to our recent paper on the cost of disturbances. Check it out here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrWhat is the cost of wildfire, windthrow and bark beetles for Europe’s forestry? We estimate that disturbances reduce Europe’s forest value by €115 bn, more than doubling to €247 bn under severe climate change. Led by @johannesmohr.bsky.social, out in @natclimate.nature.com doi.org/10.1038/s415...
- How expensive are 🪲💨🔥?! I can‘t believe it, but my 2nd PhD paper is finally published @natclimate.nature.com! Disturbances lower the economic value of Europes 🌲 by 29%... Climate change will increase it to up to 42%! (Now imagine a company looses 42% of its value…) doi.org/10.1038/s41558-025-02408-9
- We coupled forest growth, disturbance and economic models to simulate the interaction of forest productivity and disturbances under climate change… and there are big differences across Europe with C Europe being a particular hotspot of disturbance losses.
- What a pleasure to work on this important topic together with the great Félix Bastit under the perfect supervision of @rupertseidl.bsky.social and Thomas Knoke and with the great help of Marc Grünig, @wernerrammer.bsky.social , @corneliussenf.bsky.social and Dominik Thom. Thx for everything 🙏
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrCome work with us! We are looking to fill a PhD (mountain forest management) and PostDoc position (forest adaptive capacity, w/ @juditlecinadiaz.bsky.social). We'd be happy to have you as part of our dynamic team! PhD: www.lss.ls.tum.de/fileadmin/w0... PostDoc: www.lss.ls.tum.de/fileadmin/w0...
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrAs the mean rate of forest disturbance is increasing, so does its temporal variance. Proof that Taylor's law also applies to disturbance ecology, and a warning of more severe future extremes. Paper led by @corneliussenf.bsky.social w/ @tommaso-jucker.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...
- Reposted by Johannes S. Mohr🎓 Come work with us! We are offering a new PhD position in our lab! You will study the impacts of forest disturbance and fragmentation on microclimate and forest regeneration, together with @katjakowalski.bsky.social. Applicants from diverse backgrounds encouraged! shorturl.at/RT4uk Please RT!
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrCould setting forest areas aside for conservation lead to more disturbances?🌲 Analysis of 314 pairs of managed & set-aside forests across Germany found no increase in disturbance rates in forest reserves. In fact, set-aside areas had fewer disturbances 🌏 🧪 doi.org/10.1111/1365...
- Reposted by Johannes S. MohrTwo inspiring days of discussions to better understand forests' adaptive capacity to disturbances! 🌳🔥🪲💨 Grateful for the inspiring group, the motivation, and the ideas we exchanged! Thanks to @dfg.de for funding and to @edfm-tum.bsky.social for being part of the journey. Excited for what's ahead! 🚀
- #SmartForest2025 started with a full house and a fantastic key note of @rupertseidl.bsky.social! Looking forward to all the discussions in the next days
- The last signs are in place, and we're super excited for our #SmartForest2025 conference. Over the next two days, we'll discuss new smart tools and technologies to support forest science and management with both researchers and practitioners. Stay tuned and reach out if you're joining!🥳
