Local Councillor (Green Party) at Buckinghamshire Council. All views are strictly on a personal capacity. We may disagree, but let's always keep it civil. I post on work-related stuff via my other Bsky account
- @georgemonbiot.bsky.social as always on the money, literally…
- 1. In 2009 I wrote this. I argued that Peter Mandelson's department “functions as a fifth column within government, working for corporations to undermine democracy and the public interest.” This thread explains what I saw, and reaches a startling conclusion.🧵 www.monbiot.com/2009/05/04/m...
- One of the great joys of being a councillor is that I get to work with amazing young people. The Councillor Shadowing Scheme is Buckinghamshire’s best kept secret: a chance for young people to shadow a councillor and find out more about local government. www.youthvoicebucks.co.uk/opportunitie...
- Reposted by Maru MorminaPlease spread this far and wide, as stories don't get much bigger than this. When the government blocks even the intelligence services from telling us we're heading for environmental catastrophe, you know we have a problem. A very big problem. - The melting of Greenland is going to unleash WWIII. Climate change? Nah - we’ve got other things to worry about
- That’s why the UK should rejoin the EU, under a Green government.
- Because I don’t want to be accused of bragging, I’m not going to post membership numbers again, until we reach 200,000. Which is probably soon. #GreenParty join.greenparty.org.uk
- As someone dealing with parking issues, traffic issues, road maintenance issues, almost on a daily basis, I’ve long maintained that the only solution is to limit the number of cars people can own. Nice to see confirmation. theconversation.com/how-the-uks-...

- No party has won a majority of the vote since 1930, yet we have near-constant single-party governments. Parliaments never represent the will of the electorate. It's time to ditch FPTP. - Two of my favourite people in one podcast
- Powerful.
- Yeah… go ahead and RIP the NHS, social care, the science and tech sectors, and all the other areas of the British economy that depend on talent without any qualifiers.
- I utterly condemn the attack on Manchester synagogue. I utterly condemn Israel’s government attack on Palestinians. These are not contradictory thoughts. It’s just common humanity. But…
- Can you help my community realise a two-decade-long dream of a cyclepath to allow safe and sustainable travel for commuters, shoppers, children and families? It's an ambitious project to build a link between two important settlements, across the Buckinghamshire-Oxfordshire border. chng.it/wZswhDtBQ2

- The answer is not calling out Farage for what he is - a crafty seller of snake oil - but taking the oxygen out of the flames he stokes by consigning him to oblivion. The more ink and airwaves spent on this man (even if to denounce him) the more his toxic brand gains prominence.
- “By choosing to use Amazon's business services, local authorities are opting to procure from a company known for workers' rights violations, tax avoidance and excessive environmental impacts”. It seems many councils spend millions on Amazon and AWS research.ethicalconsumer.org/research-hub...
- One of the perks of being a Councillor is that I get to help people obtain the justice they deserve, often after a long fight with the system. Most are minor cases, and the delays are not due to uncertainty of the legal position but under-capacity in enforcement teams.
- As the climate and environmental crises intensify (and the political climate), it's not too soon to think about raising awareness about COP30 this autumn and to support appropriate action in support of a more sustainable future (with thanks to a Green fellow member for the headlines) cop30.br/en
- Absolutely this. Calculating the carbon footprint of often long supply chains is fraught with uncertainties but not for that should be ignored. There’s much local councils can and should do to ensure sustainable (and ethical) procurement bsky.app/profile/loca...
- Lowering the voting age to 16 is absolutely right, but it must go hand in hand with more creative approaches to bringing up engaged citizens. In Haddenham, we have started work on establishing a Youth Council to give youth opportunities for participation and greater engagement with their local area.
- I must say, I agree with this. The process, as it stands, is manipulated to avoid scrutiny and hamper debate. It’s frustrating and a waste of everyone’s time. www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/2531657...

- Notwithstanding the wind and occasional rain last Saturday, Haddenham’s iconic Summerfest was another resounding success. A real celebration of this very special community I am honoured to represent. Helping at the family zone was great fun too!!

- Remember, we are all at increased risk during very hot weather, but especially the very young, the very elderly and those with particular vulnerabilities. Let's keep an eye out for one another
- One day, we’ll be able to post something similar from across the border ☺️
- Important advice

- Two communities united for a common purpose. A project to build a much needed greenway between Thame and Haddenham stuck for decades, God knows why, despite huge popular support. Oxfordshire County Council and @buckscouncil.bsky.social the ball is on your camp to oil the wheels of bureaucracy.
- Agree, but once those that created this mess have cleaned it up. We shouldn’t bring back debt into public ownership
- A windy afternoon at the local village fete in Stone. Chatting to some amazing people is by far the best part of the job. One told me that to be a true villager is to care about community. Just imagine what the world would be like with more true villagers building community one village at a time.
- When healthcare is commodified, greed and abuse override compassion and care. This is why Greens will always fight to keep the NHS as what it is and should always be - a public service, not a profit-making business.
- Against all the divisive rhetoric making headlines, this article is such a good counterfactual to the idea that we risk becoming an 'island of strangers'. The role of faith as a driver of social cohesion and integration needs greater recognition and support. www.bucksherald.co.uk/education/bu...
