- India beat England to win their sixth Under-19 Men's World Cup after 175 in 80 balls, the highest U19 ODI score against a Full Member, from Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He's *still* only 14 but anticipated his 15th birthday in March with 15 fours and 15 sixes! Caleb Falconer replied with 115. #U19WorldCup

- Delhi Capitals have reached all four Women's Premier League finals, and lost them all - two to Mumbai Indians, and now two to Royal Challengers Bangalore. Congratulations to Smriti Mandhana's RCB, who survived a late scare when they lost three in three overs, inc Mandhana for 87 off 41! #WPLFinal
- It will be England v India in Harare on 6th Feb in World Cup ODI U19 Final. England have not won the trophy since 1998 whilst India have reached the final for the 10th time. In scoring 311 v Afghanistan in the semi-final, India achieved the highest target ever in U19 WC history. #cricketcounts
- RCB play Delhi Capitals in WPL Final on 5th Feb & have the most economic bowler (Lauren Bell 5.63 runs/over), the batter with best strike rate (Grace Harris 180.95), the bowler with best strike rate who has bowled more than 3 overs (Nadine de Klerk 11.2). Can they deliver again? #cricketcounts
- Welcome to the latest edition of ‘The Cricket Statistician’, the quarterly Journal of @ACScricket where Editor Russ Houldin has done a great job of blending historical & statistical articles to form a fine body of work. To buy a copy go to acscricket.com #cricketcounts
- RIP Sussex, Surrey & one-cap wonder for England, Tony Pigott. He scored 4,841 first class runs at 19.28 & took 672 first class wickets at 30.99. In his only Test match Pigott took 2-75 as England lost having been bowled out twice for less than 100. Pigott scored 8* & 4.
- Congratulations to Sophie Molineux who has been named as Australia Women’s Cricket Captain across all formats. Molineux, who succeeds Alyssa Healey, has played 3 Test matches, 11 ODI’s & 38 T20I’s. 7 wkts in Tests at 24.85; 22 wkts at 11.77 in ODI’s; 41 wkts at 18.68 in T20I’s.
- We've just seen the breaking of a T20I record which went back almost to the very start of the format - Australia's previous heaviest defeat was by 100 runs to England in 2005, in only the second such match played. Now they've lost to Pakistan by 111 runs in the 3,681st.
- Against Sri Lanka, Sam Curran has just taken only the second hat-trick by England in T20 internationals, after Chris Jordan's v USA in the 2024 T20 World Cup. It's Curran's third T20 hat-trick in all: he's already done it in the IPL and The Men's Hundred. stats.acscricket.com/Records/Twen... #SLvENG
- 29th January 1998 saw an abrupt and unprecedented conclusion to a Test between West Indies and England at Kingston: the newly laid pitch was uneven, the bounce unpredictable, and after just 10.1 overs the match was abandoned as conditions were judged too dangerous for play.
- David ‘Syd’ Lawrence was born on 28th January 1964. He sadly died in 2025. He played 5 Test matches for England taking 18 wickets at 37.55. He also played one ODI taking 4-66. In all 1st class matches Syd snared 515 victims at 32.97. In List A he nabbed 155 wickets at 26.43. RIP.

- NZ used 6 bowlers and they all went for 14rpo or more. This is a record: the previous worst "best" economy rate in a T20I innings where 5 or more bowlers were used was set last year when Austria made 190/2 off 11.2 overs v Hungary - 6 bowlers were used with a best ER of 13.66.
- The ACS is running a series of online talks for our members. The first is on Sat 31 Jan 10am GMT with Dr Steve Georgakis (Sydney University), author of Towards a Theoretical Understanding of Australian Colonial Sport: British Nationalism and Schools. Find out how to join @acscricket.bsky.social:
- @ACScricket member & supporter @ZaltzCricket featured in today’s Sunday Times ‘Relative Values’ discusses his relationship with cricket, his sister and many other things. #cricketcounts
- Neil Johnson, 56 today, was the star of Zimbabwe's 1999 World Cup campaign, which saw them qualify for the Super Six ahead of hosts England and holders SL. He starred in their victory over SA, scoring 76 then taking three key wickets to knock them back to 40/6 in the chase.
- Also celebrating his birthday (65th) is possibly both the richest and stupidest man to play international cricket: Sultan Zarawani, who captained UAE in the 1996 World Cup - the only native-born Emirati in a team otherwise consisting of immigrants from the subcontinent.
- Happy birthday to Mike Buss, who is 82 today. Although he never reached Test level, he enjoyed a long county career with Sussex, finishing with 11,996 runs and 547 wickets at FC level. He played alongside his brother Tony - Sussex had no Busses for over 100 years, then two came along at once.
- The Australian Open may be the only sporting event in the country less likely to see English success than an Ashes series: England's men have won five away Ashes since the last GB men's singles champion (Fred Perry in 1934), and the women's side two since Virginia Wade in 1972.
- RIP Norman Gifford, Worcestershire, Warwickshire & England slow left arm spinner who took 2,068 first class wickets at 23.56. He played 15 Test matches taking 33 wickets at 31.09. He also played two ODI’s taking 4 wickets at 12.50 as well as getting 443 ListA victims at 26.01. #cricketcounts
- To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the death of Hugh de Sélincourt, @acscricket.bsky.social member John Price has created this webpage about de Sélincourt's famous book "The Cricket Match", described by JM Barrie as "the best book about cricket, or any other game, that has ever been written".
- In amongst the excitement from Pakistan, there's been an unusual feat at the Under 19 World Cup - Viran Chamuditha (192) outscored Japan by himself even though they batted out their overs. Unsurprisingly, one player outscoring a whole team usually only happens when they're bowled out cheaply.
- This is a record which was awarded 200 years later. For decades, reference works listed Eastern Province v Border 1946-47 - then revisions to which early matches should be considered FC added Oldfield v MCC. So although the record was held by a match in 1794, it has only recently been recognised.
- World first-class record! Pakistan Television defend a target of 40, dismissing Sui Northern Gas Pipelines for just 37 to beat a 232-year-old record set when Oldfield skittled MCC for 34 chasing 41 at the old Lord's in 1794. stats.acscricket.com/Records/Firs... www.espncricinfo.com/series/presi...

- In the 19th century it was common to play "odds matches" - if one team was significantly stronger, even things out by allowing the opposition more players. Touring teams with the usual 11 players took on local sides with 14, 16 or even 22 - although they didn't all field at once!
- England have now failed to win any of their last eight Test series against Australia or India, with four 2-2 draws at home and 1-3, 0-4 and two 1-4 losses away. This is their worst such sequence, beating two previous cases (1961-66 and 1997-2003) of six winless series.
- The two occasions on which Tongue has claimed Head appear to be the only cases in Tests of one body part dismissing another. There have been a few other such names - Reginald and Phillip Hands, Archibald Palm, Don and Graeme Beard, David Brain - but none of them faced each other.
- The last time England made 350+ in both innings of a Test in Australia was 362 & 452/9d at Sydney in 2003. They've only done it four times in all.
- Starc has done it. He's the first Australian to take 30 wickets in a series since Mitchell Johnson in 2013-14. The only three more recent cases have been by Indians: Ashwin against South Africa in 2015-16 and England in 2020-21, and Bumrah in the last BGT.
- If England were to win this it would beat by one run the highest first innings deficit which a visiting team batting first in Australia has overturned to win: India at Melbourne 1981 trailed by 182, but bowled Australia out for 83 in the fourth innings to win by 59 runs.
- One for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fans: Duckett and Brook provide only the ninth case of two scores of 42 in an innings. The previous one was at the Oval in 2023 and again one of them was Duckett (the other was Stokes). Three or more has never happened.
- New one to add to the list: A v E 2026 JE Root 160, TM Head 163, JG Bethell 150*
