- A brief but intense Intense southerly foehn over the Alps: summit gusts ~120 km/h, typical foehn valleys locally >100 km/h and 15°C by Tuesday morning! Pressure gradient over Alps good proxy for y/n (~4 hPa) and strength. Foehn subsides today rapidly from west→east, but briefly returns late Thursday
- A dry January 2026 in Switzerland: The majority of stations recorded precipitation levels between 40% to 80% of the long-term average. Total monthly amounts varied between 10 l/m² (northern Grisons) and 150 l/m² (upper Jura), with a maximum of 207 l/m² recorded at mount Säntis in eastern Switzerland
- Despite some fields of cloud and widespread stratus over the lowlands: the Alps today -even under low atmospheric pressure (1005 hPa) - remain frequently sunny and snow-covered (with a bluish tint). The current extent (not height) of the snowpack—now at its seasonal maximum—is above normal.

- Clear sky over the Alps, snow red colored. At Zurich Airport (LSZH), cold fog is dissipating, coinciding with the approach of a United States Air Force aircraft. Over Italy, dense high-altitude cloud cover, with the presence of Saharan dust exhibiting typical rippled cloud-tops.

- Preliminary forecasts suggest that January is likely to be significantly colder than average across Northern and Eastern Europe. Initial projections for February 2026, compiled from 13 meteorological centres, indicate ↘️

- Low stratus blankets the northern Alps today, pushing into pre-Alpine valleys with a ceiling of ~800m (Rigi webcam); valley shape+exposure matter more than the fog’s height. Alpine valleys have foehn with up to 14°C, the southern Alps have thick cloud (but little rain), spilling over the main ridge

- The first half of the first month of the new year was also too cold across Europe (according to the JMA). The latest ECMWF weekly forecasts show the cold weather continuing over the coming week 4 and 5...
- Partly persistent low, cold (Zurich area highs only 1°C) dense fog over Swiss plateau, as seen by NOAA21 at 12h03 UTC. Alpine foehn valleys on the other hand up to 15°C. Dense high/midlevel clouds from south, even with dust from Sahara and Sahel!

- Storm Goretii (Elli) brought significant snowfall to central Europe, covering now 99% of Germany—except the Rhine valley. Climatological maximum is typically 40–45% snow cover end of January. However, this snow is forecast to melt within the week...
- First 10 days of the new year were too cold all over Europe (JMA). But next two weeks milder weather will prevail (by ECMWF)
- Baroclinic zone—juxtaposing subtropical air (SW) and Arctic air (NW)—will spawn a cyclogenesis SW of Ireland Thursday morning. Rapid deepening (bombogenesis) will reduce MSLP to ~970 hPa by 00 UTC Friday (cyclone ‘Goretti’ by Météo-France). With strong westerly winds temporary thaw in western Europe
- The calendar year 2025 was the third warmest globally and in Europe since 1940, according to ERA5 data. Thx to @climatologist49.bsky.social

- Central Europe has finally received fresh snow. With arctic air mass and clear skies widespread severe chill are expected Sunday night, with some Alpine valleys reaching −30°C! The cold wave persists until Thursday, after which stormy westerly winds will introduce again milder atlantic air.
- The dryest month in Europe on average is - according to ERA5 reanalysis data:
- With a surge of arctic air from Greenland/Canada Switzerland experiences a sunny last day of the year 2025. Extremely dry air (dew points ~−7°C) inhibited low stratus/fog, but widespread frost developed. Alpine valleys with snow (red-flagged) had temperatures plunging to −23°C!

- Under high pressure, the Alps will experience dry, often sunny and clear weather. In the north and southeast, persistent low stratus cloud may linger over low-lying areas. Snow cover (shown in blue) is more extensive than usual for this time of year.
- Cold freezing fog persists over Swiss Plateau below ~1000 m a.s.l. Above, sunny, very dry and again very warm (freezing level ~3500 m). Extreme warmth on the southern Alps, enhanced by northerly föhn effects.

- 2025 is set to be Switzerland’s fourth-hottest year since 1864. Though December in Schaffhausen saw little sun so far, annual sunshine totals with ~1300 hours in narrow Alpine valleys, to 2260h in Locarno and over 2400h on Valais summits exceed long-term averages!
- The first half of December, the first climatological winter month, was too warm across most of Europe (except the far north). As a result, there is no snow cover currently⬇️, and little will change in this respect up to Christmas ↘️

- Anticyclonic foehn over the Alps, with no low cloud in the south. Gusts reach up to 100 km/h today, with temperatures up to 13 °C in the north. EURO1k MSLP contours (1 hPa spacing) show two zones of strongest gradient: the main Alpine crest and the northern Alps.
- Thick low cloud/stratus covers the Swiss Plateau, with a top between 800 and 900 metres ... in northern Switzerland, a strong easterly wind (the Möhlin jet) is pushing it into Alsace. There is still snow in the Alps (shown in blue), but noticeably less than usual.
- Snow cover Thursday morning: Widespread green, snow-free conditions across Central Europe, extending even into Eastern Europe, southern Scandinavia, and southern Iceland (by snow report). Snow still in the Alps (by Alps Snow Monitor).

- November 2025 brought in the end some snow, frost and ice - but December 2025 was so far much too warm: all over Europe (by JMA)

- Settled and exceptionally mild conditions across central Europe. Meanwhile, a depression is developing over the eastern Atlantic, tracking across Ireland on Tuesday as low BRAM, with further intensification expected till midnight. Expected maximum 24-hour wind gusts (km/h) for Tuesday from EURO1k.

- Preliminary analyses of November 2025 using ERA5 data indicate that globally, it was the third-warmest November on record, while in Europe, it was the warmest since 1940. Thx to @climatologist49.bsky.social
- Today, the 1st of December, marks the commencement of the meteorological winter—a date designated just for climatological record-keeping purposes. Snow cover today ↙️, as indicated by both model projections and select measurements, compared to the same date last year ↘️

- Once again sunny early-winter day in Switzerland, seen by Terra/Modis. North of the Alps - above 600/700m amsl - now significant more snow than usual (source SLF). Next week southern side of the Alps will finally also get the white stuff :-)

- November 2025 will end in Europe with temperatures again significantly above the 1981–2010 climatological reference period. In the Alps, the marked anomalies of both very warm and very cold spells are expected to balance out, particularly when compared to the more recent 1991–2020 reference period
- The recent onset of winter has resulted in above-average snowfall across Switzerland for late November; however, conditions are expected to change at the beginning of December.

- Last night brought widespread frost, locally record lows, lower lows than last winter and alpine cold-air pools with –36.8°C surpassing temperatures in northern Norway! Forecasts indicate a thaw on Monday, with milder conditions persisting until Christmas (Zurich ensemble) 😲
- Following >50 cm of fresh snow locally over the past three days (@slfdavos.bsky.social), today in the Swiss Alps sunny weather with wintry snow cover (blue-tinted). Low stratus over the lowlands, neatly streaked by northeasterly winds.
- Thick smog over India and Kashmir valley, fog/low stratus in the valleys of Nepal ... as seen by Terra/MODIS on Saturday noon.
- Arctic air from Greenland, fresh snow, and clear Saturday-night: perfect recipe for severe cold across Central Europe by Sunday morning. Only southern Alpine lakes remained frost-free; some alpine valleys may reach –30°C! A thaw is already expected next week...
