- 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most dangerous years in recent times. When Western liberal democracies are those championing the "might is right" version of international politics, rather than multilateral diplomacy, we are in trouble. 🧵
- "History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme." What the United States has done in Venezuela - ostensibly as part of the 'war on drugs', now nakedly as 'war for oil' - is clearly reminiscent of toppling Saddam Hussein. This includes the role the US will apparently now play.
- We know the disastrous legacy of Iraq - the creation of ISIS. But the trashing of the rule of law in relation to international law by Israel and the United States is arguably worse.
-
View full threadA world where force is the only determinant of right and wrong, and where international law and norms are only ever used as a fig leaf, makes all of us less safe. The breakdown of the "rules-based order" should concern everyone who believes in democracy.
- Well done to the @nteunion.bsky.social bargaining team on your efforts at #UniCanberra this year. Looking forward to a big 2026! Not providing standalone reproductive health leave seems like a weird hill to die on... We'll keep pushing! ✊
- Good progress on some issues, but concerns remain on job security at #UniCanberra. We're also disappointed with UC Management's response on reproductive health - see email for the full update! To win the UC we all deserve, join @nteunion.bsky.social today at www.nteu.au/join. ✊
- It can be hard to know what to say in times like this, or whether to say anything at all. To @nteunion.bsky.social members, look to your union values for guidance. And to Australia's Jewish community, nobody deserves to feel as you do now, and you have my support.
- We reaffirm our commitment to stand against racism and discrimination in all of its forms - including anti-Semitism - and to stand against violence and hatred. These are core union values. @nteunion.bsky.social supports the statement of @australianunions.bsky.social on behalf of our movement.

- Staff at #UniCanberra have been through a lot in recent years. 5 VCs in 14 months amid a governance crisis, 200+ job losses, workloads stretched to cover the losses. @nteunion.bsky.social says staff deserve better than cuts to entitlements. UC staff should be valued, supported & respected.
- Bargaining started at #UniCanberra last week, and @nteunion.bsky.social members spoke out about the need to address workloads & salaries. ✊ And that was before UC confirmed proposals to strip away rights to fixed-term and casual conversion to secure work... 👿

- This relates to casual professional staff penalty rates, which were discussed in bargaining talks in 2022/3 including a then-DVC and the then-CPO. If that level of #UniCanberra is aware of the problem, and staff were still being underpaid, it's a governance issue. @nteunion.bsky.social
- Today #UniCanberra disclosed $1.5m in underpayments to casual staff. @nteunion.bsky.social raised these issues in bargaining & simplified the Agreement. Despite that, staff were still underpaid. The issues are historic, but UC governance still needs fixing. www.canberratimes.com.au/story/908934...

- “Ultimately, the responsibility rests with Chancellor Julie Bishop. She presided over this continued period of dysfunction, and it was under her watch that catastrophic failures occurred.” - Senator Tony Sheldon @nteunion.bsky.social wants greater change at #ANU.
- It has taken time to get university governance on the public radar. Our sector has experienced casualisation, wage theft, & mass job cuts. @nteunion.bsky.social, especially @alisonbarnes.bsky.social, have been great at going after the root cause - the leadership & governance crisis in higher ed.
