- The sad saga of the Hen Harrier continues. A red listed bird is persecuted so that people can shoot grouse for fun and DEFRA continue to be impotent when it comes to dealing with this wildlfe crime.
- There are at least 14 other cases that I know of, still to be publicised. The wilful blindness of Defra Ministers allows this criminality to continue. They're not even embarrassed. #RaptorResearch #WildlifeCrime #Ornithology raptorpersecutionuk.org/2025/07/24/1...
- Reposted by AedeenWhen four breeding male Hen Harriers suspiciously disappeared from nests in May, two from RSPB Geltsdale and two from the Forest of Bowland, it was clear the females would struggle to raise their chicks alone. The odds were bleak.
- From yesterday, from my wild garden, a few snippets. This weeks rain has refreshed the area some of the Trefoil is blooming again. Common Blue Butterfly, bees on Knapweed and the lovely lacy flower of Wild Carrot. #wildgarden
- I think most people would prefer water companies to be renationalised again. They have shown themsleves to be greedy awarding themsleves with fat bonuses while taking many shortcuts. This Labour government is not brave enough to take on corporate greed or tackle bad governance & management.
- It's performative. If Steve Reed were really "furious" about water bills, he wouldn't have ruled out renationalisation, or forbidden the Independent Water Commission to recommend it. He enables the filthiest, most parasitic capital to defeat the public interest. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Chris Hinchliff has been a staunch defender of nature and is far closer to the public view than the prime minster. Such arrogance 😡. Great quote here from Craig Bennett, agree 💯 .
- My husband just found this near one our drain covers outside. Have no idea how it got there. My I Phone identity info says it’s a Smooth Newt! Anyone agree? @yorkswildlife.bsky.social ?

- Tried to share the article but it’s in New Statesman..
- As I am still not strong enough to go out and about, my garden and wild garden area has been great for me to spend some time in and enjoy watching the butterflies and other insects..
- Just a few more snippets from the wild garden area. Ladybird and bees on some Teasle. Knapweed popular with bees and hover flies. A lone Corncockle flower..
- And yesterday spotted this Humming bird moth having a good feed on Honeysuckle which grows over the pergola leading into the wild garden area.
- Also gald to say that there are still bats about. I am sure they are Pipistrelle. Sat and waited for them to flit about above the wildgarden area on Thursday evening. I don’t know where they roost.
- Souther Hawker, Common Darter and Meadow Brown butterfly. Watched the Soutgern Hawker darting about. So many insects in the air.
- From the last couple of days in the wild garden and main garden: Comma butterfly, many Large Whites, Gate keeper and Speckled Brown. The Wild Basil area is very popular with all the Whites and Green veined butterflies .
- Not a great photo but the colours of the fly caught my eye: my I-phone information look tells me it is a deer fly: Chrysops relictus! 🤔 Feeding on Ragwort in my wild garden area. I noticed a butterfly struggling on the ground and turned it over. It had been attacked by a wasp!

- Pics taken by phone yesterday. A Comma butterlfy and a gathering of Ladybirds in the main garden. There were a couple of Common Darters in the wild garden area.
- Yesterday afternoon after a dull and wet morning and despite it being windy, I have never seen so many butterflies in the garden. It was amazing watching them all.

- The wild garden area is full of butterflies during the day. Many large whites and a few Greinveined butterflies are here. Ladies Bedstraw is taking over from the Trefoil. Knapweed and some cornflowers as well. Wild carrot is a couoke of areas as well.
- There is some Mallow. Hover flies are go here as well!! I spotted a Migrant Hawker darting around the other day. But its very dry down here as well. So its slowed things down a bit here as well. When you look across the garden in certain light you can same in see many insects in the air.
- There are Lady birds around. Native one mainly down here but in main garden its Harlequins seem to outnumber the natives. Late afternoon into the evening Red Admirals turn up in the main garden. There are bees around as well and spotted some Redtailed bumble bees on and off.
- Wild basil is also starting to flower.
- Its so lovely to have such warm sunny weather. I have never seen the garden so dry for this time of the year. The very warm weather ris a big challenge for me and I am back chemotherapy and so am still not doing very much at the moment.

- Box tree moth catchers: using pheromones to attract the male moths: two vials used per trap. Needing to take some action against these invasive pests. The liquid is water & dishwasher soap. Was quite shocked to see so many! #boxtreemoths #rhs
- Also used a spray on the box which is bee and bird friendly. I have quite a number of box shrubs and a couple of short hedges which have all been affected by the caterpillars. I don’t like having to do this but need to get it under control.

- Seems to be a new wave of Red Admirals visiting the garden Kate afternoon this week..
- Last year was the first time I found a Box tree moth here. Didn’t think it would proliferate. But when I returned from a stay in hospital,I was shocked to find that the caterpillars have destroyed some Shrubs completely and attacked many others. #boxtreemoth
- Meanwhile in the wild garden area. I made the decision to have some mown areas down here. All is growing well. Not as many Ox-eye daisies this year: a deliberate decision as I noticed that the the Trefoils and other flowers are what the bees visit more.Hoping to to spend a bit more down here.
- A few things growing in the main garden at the moment. Perennials have really take off & am waiting for some to flower but these catch my eye at the moment. Large poppy, hybrid foxglove . I have also got some Clarain growing & am relaxed about the Hedge nettle growing in a couple of areas as well

- Have not been very active these last couple of weeks as another wave of side effects from the Radiotherapy have slowed me down so much more. I haven’t had the energy to do much at all, not finding this easy at all.
- And so there are some young Blackbirds! Took these photos quickly yesterday evening. There are actually three hatchlings in the nest but I only managed to photograph two of them. The female has been busy gathering small caterpillars for them. Have not seen a male bird feed them yet. #Blackbirds
- Hoping last nights rain means that the birds can gather worms for them. It has been so dry these last few weeks..

- Am absolutely disgusted with what is been done with this planning bill. Environmental ignorance on a big scale. Chalk streams are rare globally and the UK is home to 85% of these special habitats, which are already under terrible pressure.
- “[Chalk streams] are globally significant ecosystems and are largely restricted to our shores. So we have a huge responsibility to protect them.” Really disappointing for this amendment I moved in the Planning & Infrastructure Bill Committee to be vetoed. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
- There is no need for a new for a new bill. Developers should be able to build with good environmental practice. Land banking should be tackled instead.
