I guess YA is open to interpretation, but I would not give them to a 12 year old, for example.
Would you call McCarthy's The Road YA lit? It's about a boy, his dad, and the apocalypse, but dang.
Feb 2, 2026 06:56Mostly tho YA is such a weird category, it didn't exist back in my day, there was only juvenile/middle-grade books and then plain fiction some of which was popular for high schoolers. So it's funny to think what would've been published as YA. You're probably right about Parable.
