- Dammit, It's high time that @ellenkushner.bsky.social's Riverside books (Swordspoint, etc.) were turned into a television series. She's been creating these kinds of characters since the 1980s, for heaven's sake. I'd watch a Riverside series in a heartbeat. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

- This piece by Tich Minter, about visiting Sylvia Townsend Warner in Dorset when STW was in her 70s, is charming and fascinating:
- AM's daughter, Janet Machen, was a driving force behind the Sylvia Townsend Warner Society, so important in preserving her legacy. Here's Tich Minter's lovely memoir of Janet M and STW in the 1970s. discovery.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/15...
- In case you, too, didn't know this about Sylvia Townsend Warner:
- Sylvia Townsend Warner's aunt Purefoy was married to Arthur Machen, accounting for the Machen mood in Lolly Willowes & some of W's wonderful short stories, inc 'A Spirit Rises', with its curious rocking horse. On visits to Winterton AM would sit on Valentine Ackland's rocking horse while declaiming.

- This is a powerful, beautifully written post on difference, loss, and grief (passed on with a trigger warning on the subject of stillborn births, for those who find that difficult).

- Here's a lovely post (and video link) from Catherine Munro about Shetland ponies in winter. I highly recommend her lovely book The Ponies at the End of the World. Our Dartmoor ponies are tough and weather-wise too, but winters here are not so fierce!

- Reposted by Terri WindlingIt's the national year of reading in the uk in 2026. Instead of asking "why don't kids read any more", ask "how can I help them find the stories (and non fic) they will fall in love with". Less "get off my lawn whippersnappers" and more "come, sit on the lawn, here's a comic".

- Our Lottie turned three years old this week. She tumbled into our family at an inopportune time and caused absolute havoc, but stole our hearts. Now I can't imagine life without this bright-eyed, funny, loving, and irrepressibly joyful little soul.
- Happy winter holidays from me and the little reindeer, whatever you may be celebrating this season. And for those who find the holidays hard, for all kinds of reasons, I'm thinking of you especially today. May the days pass gently.
- Reposted by Terri WindlingGood morning. It was good to be back in the fields.
- If you're looking for a last-minute holiday present for someone who loves art and biographies, 'Artists, Siblings, Visionaries' is terrific. Our spaniel, Lottie, does't look terribly impressed in this picture, but I was.
- Having read all the previous biographies of Gwen & Augustus John, I was intrigued by @judithmackrell.bsky.social's new joint biography, wondering what more could be written about these two artists. Quite a lot, as it turns out. It is a magnificent and insightful book, and I didn't want it to end.
