Sylvia Townsend Warner's aunt Purefoy was married to Arthur Machen, accounting for the Machen mood in Lolly Willowes & some of W's wonderful short stories, inc 'A Spirit Rises', with its curious rocking horse. On visits to Winterton AM would sit on Valentine Ackland's rocking horse while declaiming.
