- How Ireland Voted 2024 is published. My copies finally turned up yesterday having been delivered to a random address. Thanks to the lovely person who accepted them and kept them for me. Nice to have the physical book before Christmas and copies are starting to appear in bookshops as well.
- Congratulations to Dr Aodh Quinlivan, John Ger O’Riordan and Anne Twomey on the launch of their book ‘Leading the Way’. The book documents trailblazing women in Cork politics and city management over more than a century. A lovely event at City Hall last night.
- An Taoiseach Mícheál Martin delivering the inaugural Prof Dermot Keogh Memorial Lecture this evening in @ucc.ie Lovely tributes to Dermot in the speeches and Dermot’s final publication will also be launched later.
- Writing about immigration in @irishexaminer.bsky.social Govt taking a risk with tougher talk & policies. May look like it's following public opinion but Irish econ is hugely dependent on intrnl labour. Few parties have out flanked the right on migration & won www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/comm...
- Congratulations to Evelien Geerts and Adam Loughnane from the Dept of Philosophy on winning @UCC Presidents’ awards for teaching this evening.
- Dublin’s Herzog Park set to be ‘denamed’ by city councillors over Israel connections www.irishtimes.com/ireland/dubl... >>a really vile proposal by Dublin City Council.
- It was lovely to discuss the inauguration and the coming term of President Catherine Connolly with @mcculld.bsky.social on @rteradio.bsky.social this morning.
- Reposted by Theresa ReidyDeadline for application to @epssnet.bsky.social Belfast 2026 conference is this Friday 7th of November. - Congratulations to Iain Dale on the launch of ‘The Taoiseach, A Century of Political Leadership’ last night in Hodges Figis. The collection includes chapters on every Taoiseach up to now and there was a great crowd at the launch. My own chapter was on Brian Cowen.
- It was a pleasure to meet with the delegation of city officials from Shanghai on Monday. They were in @ucc.ie as part of the Cork-Shanghai partnership to mark its 20th anniversary. We had a great discussion about education programmes for public officials.

- The National Election and Democracy Study will have research on the presidential election in a few weeks with data available for all to use from our website. We will share more information once the fieldwork is complete. #Aras25
- It is a great privilege to be involved in election coverage for RTE. Presidential elections are unusual elections, so much pressure & scrutiny on just a few people. It must be an awful experience even for the winner but the process is vital for democracy.
- Reposted by Theresa ReidyIt’s official - highest percentage AND highest absolute number of votes in the history of the presidency More than Dev, more than Michael D. #Aras25
- Turnout figures are poor but they seem to be edging towards 40%. It was very quiet in Cork City this morning. I was the only voter in the polling station at 11.
- Lovely to speak today with members of the South Korean Electoral Commission delegation who are in Ireland on a research trip for the presidential election.

- Reposted by Theresa ReidyFascinating analysis by Prof.Dornschneider-Elkink on populist attitudes and voting in GE 2024. #PSAI25 @jelkink.bsky.social
- I was talking about turnout at the 2024 general election at #PSAI25 this morn. Downward trend is clear; on average presidential election turnout is 14 points lower than general elections. If the trend holds, turnout on 24 October should be in low 40s.
- But there are lots of reasons to believe turnout could be even lower for #Aras25 V few candidates, low intensity campaign, lots of dissatisfaction with ballot choice. Turnout below 40 would not be surprising.
- Fascinating social class and voting data from Prof Gail McElroy from the 2024 general election National Election and Democracy Study. #PSAI25
- Fascinating data from Kevin Saudé on negative partisanship among voters at the last election. #PSAI25
- The full details of our panel are included below. All using data from the National Election and Democracy Study funded by the Electoral Commission. #PSAI25
- Kevin Saudé is presenting now on a co-authored paper with Rory Costello on negative and positive partisanship. Also using data from the National Election and Democracy Study.
- Panel 2 of the Voting and Elections specialist group has started at #PSAI25 in Galway. Chloe Holmes up first with a fascinating paper on conspiracy beliefs.

- Writing about the presidential election in @irishexaminer.bsky.social The voting hasn’t happened yet but already the fallout within parties has started. - Conversation about the budget has a peculiar parallel worlds feel. In convo with Claire Byrne this morning, caller after caller bemoaned the stinginess of the package which is at odds with the huge 9.4 BILLION spending increase. Tension is rooted in the welfare state model & voters' expectations.
- 2025 was all about cash payments but 2026 is much more focused on expanding services. The groundwork wasn’t sufficiently laid by the govt for the change of direction. And services are patchy in some places already, and voters don’t trust that improvements will happen.
- Got the Heather Humphries election flyer this morning in the post and had the realisation that Jim Gavin’s literature will probably still have to be sent out for legal reasons. He is still a candidate. Can a candidate halt the circulation of their literature?
- Presidential election strikes again: these elections should only be contested by our most eminent and politically experienced citizens. Every one else ends up bruised from a campaign that is unlike any other in its individual personal scrutiny. #Aras25
- Nice evening to start the season in Thomond Park. Storm has passed over.
- Presidential election campaigns are tests of endurance and discipline. Jim Gavin’s campaign is learning that today. With only three candidates, there is no space for any misstep. And as the campaign progresses, the chances of slip-ups only gets higher… #Aras25
- In a low-energy presidential debate, only one candidate lit a spark www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025... >>the best piece on the debate last night, Gerard Howlin analyses it perfectly.
