RoordaLab
Obsessed with vision and optics. Opinions (have many but share few) are my own and most posts are from my labs at The University of Waterloo (Canada) and UC Berkeley (USA). Oh...and that's my retina in the profile picture.
- Feels great to be back in the bite bar at #UCBerkeley, doing experiments with my postdoc @shangbangluo.bsky.social and PhD student Jason Wong. #adaptiveoptics #AOSLO #visionscience #AOOCT
- Striking example characterizing a paradoxical decoupling between the retinal image and perception. Thanks @josiedangelo.bsky.social for all the hard work to get this paper past the finish line. jov.arvojournals.org/article.aspx...
- The Lick Observatory is one of the most beautiful, historical, and scientific treasures of the Bay Area and a jewel in the crown of University of California Observatories. Best wishes for a full recovery.
- Indulging in some actual building today. This will ultimately be a system for splitting broadband, supercontinuum light into 5 separate spectral channels. But for today, it's just lego blocks for scientists! #AOSLO #adaptiveoptics
- New opportunity for top-tier researchers to move to the great country of Canada 🇨🇦. @uwaterloo.ca will have multiple openings. Chairs come with either $1M/yr or 0.5M/yr for 8 years+. If you are a top-tier #visionscience researcher, let's talk. www.canada.ca/en/impact-pl...
- Happy thanksgiving to all my American friends. Just a normal working day here at @uwoptometry.bsky.social. Picture from my bike commute this morning. And remember, there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
- Just received my deformable mirror from ALPAO! There's no turning back now. #AOSLO @uwaterloo.ca
- I always knew that Teresa Puthussery was a genius...this just confirms it! #visionscience www.macfound.org/fellows/clas...
- Reposted by RoordaLabMy boss/mentor Teresa Puthussery won a MacArthur genius grant today! She shares the award with Oakland novelist Tommy Orange (read There There! It's awesome!), resource recovery chemist William Tarpeh, and 22 others. Congratulations Teresa! www.macfound.org/fellows/clas...
- Congratulations @leahgjohnston.bsky.social for winning the @optica-fvm.bsky.social YIA! Most #visionscience folks know that stabilized retinal images fade. Fewer know that stabilized, but flickering, images also fade. Even fewer know that the flicker-fading doesn't take place in the retina.
- Congrats to this year’s Young Investigator Award winners #OpticaFVM! 🎉 Leah Johnston "Profound perceptual fading of stabilized flicker cannot be accounted for by RGC desensitization" Joseph Emerson "Different contextual modulation mechanisms exhibit distinct laminar profiles in human V1"
- Seems that a small earthquake knocked our #AOSLO #AOOCT system out of alignment. It may be time to engage to the air suspension.... One of the perils of doing research at #ucberkeley. www.sfgate.com/news/article...
- Hannah works hard every on her PhD, doing very cool #visionscience every day in my lab at #UCBerkeley. But does she go home and put up her feet every night? Nope! She is speed-puzzling phenom, heading to the world championship later this month. Go Hannah! www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco...
- Hey @thorlabs.bsky.social, where are my snacks? Is it because I'm in 🇨🇦?
- 🇨🇦 This sign calls to me every morning on my commute to @uwaterloo.ca. Question is: blow off work and head west to Lake Cowichan BC or east to Cappahayden NFLD? @transcanadatrail.bsky.social www.tctrail.ca
- My CV in ceramic.
- When your bike ride takes you north of Waterloo. #mennonitecountry
- Reposted by RoordaLab✨Our newest eLife paper is out!✨ 👉 elifesciences.org/articles/98662 When retinal cells die, who cleans up? Non-invasive imaging shows microglia👇 rush to help but don’t recruit neutrophils from the bloodstream. @urneuroscience.bsky.social @cvsuor.bsky.social @elife.bsky.social #FluorescenceFriday
- Spotted this morning outside of the stunning Daniels Building at the University of Toronto, where I'm attending @iccp-conference.bsky.social. Nothing computational here, just a regular photo. Super excited to see the hawk...but that rat is huuuge!
- 6+6 = 12 reasons to move to Waterloo, Canada. First 6..... 6 job openings in the University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science/Waterloo Eye Institute. lnkd.in/d3QD5wFA see thread for the next 6.
- Reasons to move to Univ of Waterloo 1. 12 mo salary 2. Multidisciplinary research environment 3. Top Canadian university in areas of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Comprehensive Research 4. Traditional pension plan 5. Universal Health Care 6. Stable sources of research funding (NSERC, CIHR)
- I just moved back here (after ~30 years in the US) so feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

- one more thing..... apply soon, but don't worry too much about the deadline of July 31. We're flexible.
- Lots of room for growth at @uwaterloo.ca. 🇨🇦 And were hiring 6 new faculty in #optometry and #visionscience. Spread the news. Contact me if you want to learn more. share.google/8HXvp3LbwLPw...
- Some things are new (the Instagram-worthy sign) and some things are old (the iconic Dana Porter Library, where I spent many hours as a physics undergrad in the late 80s). @uwaterloo.ca 🇨🇦
- Multiple faculty opportunities are open at the @uwaterloo.ca in 🇨🇦 Canada 🇨🇦 for someone wishing to launch their academic career in Vision Science. I just moved here and I think you'll find that it's a great place to live, work, and thrive. Happy to tell you more if you're interested.
- We are hiring SIX faculty positions at the assistant professor/assistant clinical professor level! Opportunities like this don't come around every day! @uwaterloo.ca @waterloosci.bsky.social #Optometry #Hiring uwaterloo.ca/optometry-vi...
- Final moments as a resident of the USA. Soon to reside again in the great and civilized country of Canada. @uwaterloo.ca here I come.

- While many of you may suffer FOMO for #OLO, we folks in the lab suffer FOMO for YOLO. That was the case until Stuart Semple graciously sent us some free bottles. What this all about? Check out www.culturehustleusa.com/products/yol... to find out. Thanks!!!
- Thanks to @ucobservatories.bsky.social for the fun and informative 'insider' tour of the @lickobservatory.bsky.social for me, my former students and postdocs, and colleagues. Special thanks to @elinorgates.bsky.social, resident astronomer extraordinaire and ultimate tour guide for her time.
- And, in case you don't know, the @lickobservatory.bsky.social which opened in 1888 was - and still remains - one of the biggest refracting telescopes in the world! As @elinorgates.bsky.social puts it, it's the 'telescopiest' big telescope you'll ever see. Today's big telescope all use mirrors.
- Oddly, PhDs at @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social don't require public defenses - we just need 3 committee members to unceremoniously sign off. To make up, we hold an annual symposium, where families, friends, faculty and students attend. Congrats Max Greene and Stephanie Reeves for outstanding talks.
- Both earned PhDs in #VisionScience. We'll deserved.
- Mentors were Will Tuten and @joteromillan.bsky.social
- Congratulations Jorge (and Stephanie). This is surely just the beginning of establishing your legacy at Berkeley.
- Reposted by RoordaLabSenator Durbin noted that some (I believe Republican Senators) had indicated the US had been doing more than its share of biomedical research and it was time for other countries take a turn. I felt I had to interrupt to respond...
- Such an honor for me to receive this award named after Bob Boynton, who I never knew, but whose approach to science was an inspiration for me. His son just happened to attending #VSS2025 when the award was announced. The apple does not fall far from the tree.
- 🔥 We’re thrilled to announce that adaptive optics trailblazer Austin Roorda (@roordalab.bsky.social) is the 2025 Boynton Award recipient! 🎉 His AOSLO let us image, stimulate, and track single photoreceptors 🧠👁️ He’ll give the Boynton Lecture at #OpticaFVM, Oct 2–5 @ Univ. Minnesota. Save the date!
- Looking forward to attending and participating in this meeting.
- having a great time at @vssmtg.bsky.social ! Looking forward to see many colleages again this summar at the Eye Movements GRC www.grc.org/eye-movement... Still time to submit an application until June 8th!
