You have a point but to be fair, that building is one of the most significant symbols in the world, for better or worse. And symbols matter, as we've seen time and time again.
Actions matter, symbols don't.
Agreed! As George Carlin noted, we can "leave symbols to the symbol-minded".
But it is awful, of course, not least because new construction allows for bugs and other devices to be put in, so now the East Wing can spy at close range on the West Wing.
Another reason to tear that ballroom down ASAP.

I do see your point: the White House has indeed been a symbol, to the whole world, of the US and its resolve.
But the US government is being gutted, so perhaps the literal gutting of this treasured symbol is a great way to tell the US and the world, "Technical Difficulties, Be Right Back, Maybe"?
