- Our new article in @science.org enables social media reranking outside of platforms' walled gardens. We add an LLM-powered reranking of highly polarizing political content into N=1256 participants' feeds. Downranking cools tensions with the opposite party—but upranking inflames them.

- New paper: Do social media algorithms shape affective polarization? We ran a field experiment on X/Twitter (N=1,256) using LLMs to rerank content in real-time, adjusting exposure to polarizing posts. Result: Algorithmic ranking impacts feelings toward the political outgroup! 🧵⬇️
- Why does this matter? Social media algorithms don’t just show you content you might like—they shape how you feel about people who think differently. Can changing what these algorithms prioritize reduce political hostility?
- We focused on posts expressing Partisan Animosity and Antidemocratic Attitudes (AAPA) as polarizing. These are defined by 8 bipartisan factors identified in the Strengthening Democracy Challenge (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...)

- Academic job market post! 👀 I’m a CS Postdoc at Stanford in the Stanford HCI group. I develop ways to improve the online information ecosystem by designing better social media feeds & improving Wikipedia. I work on AI, Social Computing, and HCI. piccardi.me 🧵
- I develop tools (e.g., web extensions, AI models) and design large-scale field experiments to investigate how social media’s algorithmic curation shapes our online experiences, such as well-being and political polarization. Check out this paper! arxiv.org/abs/2406.19571
- In a recent large-scale field experiment using this tool on X, I explored how reranking feeds in real time with an LLM—demoting (bi)partisan content that supports antidemocratic attitudes—affects participants. Paper coming soon!
