- Haydée Santamaría, a key figure in the Cuban Revolution, was born on this day in 1922. She participated in the assault on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, for which she was imprisoned and tortured. She fought in the guerrilla war and founded the Casa de las Americas. #onthisday

- ✏️ 🇨🇺 On this day in 1961, Cuba declared itself free of illiteracy, following the 'Year of Education' when more than 200,000 Cubans volunteered in literacy brigades. Over 700,000 Cubans learned to read and write and Cuba's literacy rate rose to 96%, one of the highest in the world.
- ✊ 🇨🇺 Eleven years ago today, the remaining three imprisoned members of the Miami Five were finally freed after spending 16 years unjustly behind bars in the US. Their release, a huge victory for the Cuban people, followed years of tireless campaigning and solidarity work.

- 🇨🇺 🚲 25 cyclists have completed a 200 mile sponsored ride through Cuba with CSC. In Pinar del Rio they visited local unions and donated medical supplies to the Luis Augusto Turcios Lima polyclinic, and braille machines and educational supplies, to the José Marti Special School.

- 🇨🇺❤️🇵🇸 Cubans are gathering at the Anti-imperialist Tribune in Havana for a rally in solidarity with the Palestinian people this morning. #CubaConPalestina
- On this day in 1967, Che Guevara was captured by army forces in Bolivia. He was executed on the orders of the CIA the next day. Just over a week later, speaking to a rally of more than one million people in Havana, Fidel declared 8 October the 'Day of the Heroic Guerrilla'.

- Today marks 65 years since the 6 April 1960 secret US State Department memorandum which laid down the blueprint for the blockade and future policy towards Cuba - economic warfare, to create shortages and suffering and “bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government.” ⬇️
